Dear Anita. I am so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. Working with Tom when he was Fire Chief was a wonderful experience. I was always impressed by his leadership, wisdom and his great sense of humour. I also enjoyed meeting you and the visits you and Tom made to my home in Chester over the years. I recall his pride in his antique cars as he drove in the driveway. My sincere condolences to you and your family

My greatest memory of Tom was his caring and kindness. He didn't know me very well but he was always behind my efforts as a volunteer at the MMoA and went out of his way to try and have them pursue me as a full time employee. I have a great deal of respect for Tom and I will miss his good humour and wisdom...Timothy Friese, Interpretive Guide Volunteer at the MMoA.

In the early 1970s while building a kit home on Leslie Road I first met the wonderful neighbour Tom as I struggled with an interior wall. Tom had come up to the roughed in entrance and suppressing laughter explained how to build the wall on the floor and then push it up. He and Anita were stalwarts of the Brookside community where we all built, mostly, our first homes. He was a great neighbour!

Thinking of you and your family, Mrs. Power. It was so lovely to see you and Mr. Power again after many years, when you visited with my Uncle & Aunt (Claire & Bud) just a few weeks ago while I was there.
When I remember Mr. Power, I think of my childhood years and all the fun we would have when our many families would gather for the Fire Department Christmas parties each year. Mr. Power would have what seemed like endless amounts of treats for all the kids who attended.
I never forgot the time my father took the day off work (without telling anyone) and brought me for a picnic and swimming at McGrath's Lake. While we were in the middle of the lake swimming, Mr. Power came floating along in his canoe, just to wish us a wonderful day. I never forgot the look on my father's face, and never understood why we had to go home so quick. ha! ha!
Sending you much strength and prayers to get you through these days ahead. Rest in peace Mr. Power.

My Family will never be able to repay the debt that I owe to this man , Chief Tom Power.
After the entrance testing process concluded , my final interview was with Chief Power. I cannot put into words , the elation that my Wife , Sharon , and I experienced when we learned that I was going to be hired into the Halifax Fire Department. Training began May 14 , 1990. My First day on Duty at CHQ was June 28 , 1990 , MY 28th BIRTHDAY !!!
Chief Power's decision to hire me gave my Family the ability to enjoy a well above average lifestyle for which we will be eternally grateful.
As I would learn in the early years of my career , Chief Power was a firm but fair leader who demanded excellence from all of his personnel. Chief Power was a visionary , always "looking" far beyond the horizon.
The Halifax Fire Department achieved new heights under his leadership. Not a doubt in my mind , "we were the best Fire Department in the Province , by far !!!!"
Sincerest condolences are extended from the Dacey Family to the entire Power Family.
Chief Power , I will sorely miss you and never ever forget you.
Finally Chief Power , "I can't wait to have a one on one conversation with you when we meet again one day "old buddy". Your career started as a Hoseman , the same as mine. My topic of choice will be the absence of YOUR VISION in today's Fire Service. You had SO MANY great ideas that never had the opportunity to be implemented."
Rest In Peace Chief , Rest In Peace. Forever missed.

Anita & Entire Family,
Our hearts and prayers are with you at this time of sadness. Ciero, the philosopher stated,”. . . a life well-lived” never dies.” Tom lived an extraordinarily full of life and his humility and pride always shone through our conversations over the past forty years. The love of his life, Anita, became the source of strength and inspiration as they journeyed together modelling servicing community while navigating family life. My last conversation with him was at the community pharmacy where he was meeting and greeting friends and community members, while waiting for a prescription. Stories of their sons and beautiful grandchildren were laden with pride. As always, he asked about Kevin and the family and shared a joke with a tidbit of his life’s wisdom as a p.s. that followed.
Rest in peace, dear friend, we will miss your impish grin and laugh!

Dear Anita and families: So Saddened to hear of Tom's passing. Stopped us in our tracts. Grieving with you and remembering our history with Tom.
Summer brought cottagers & Tom entered the Brookside neighborhood. Janet remembers the quick team of friends Harvey, Bobby and Tom forged at the 8-10 yrs. of age. This number of kids grew as other campers and residents added to summer life. The friendship continued in the teen years and keeping in touch in the early years of marrying and first born.
Returning to Nova Scotia Tom took on our request to build our home. Still in it today and thankful for the great job he did. How quickly the years pass while keeping in touch continued. Tom's smile, friendliness and easy talk and humor always apparent. Harvey remarked it is 70+ years of knowing each other.
Remembering Tom with fondness and thankfulness for the shared life and memories you and Tom have had. May they be a blessing every day Anita. Janet and Harvey MacDonald.

I worked with Tom as Curator at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. Tom was an accomplished model builder. He worked for years as a volunteer repairing artifact models in the museum collection and building models-to-order of historic vessels for exhibitions. He was probably the most adaptable and prolific model builder that I have ever worked with. It was a joy to give him a bundle of plans and photos and a day later, the model would begin to appear. Best of all, I loved his stories about the fire department, travel antique cars and all the characters he'd met - offering cheerful studies of human nature and the ironies of life.

Dear Anita and family,
We send along our most sincere condolences on Tom's passing. If memory serves me correct, Tom wrote his own obituary and a fine one it is. A wonderful friend, a gifted artist and always ready with an opinion .. he will certainly be missed. When we visited your home, Tom showed me a map with pin points on all the places you and Tom visited ... an impressive map indeed. You can now add a pin point on Heaven ... Ya gotta know God and the gang will get a few strong opinions once Tom settles in.
Tom will be missed but he will live on in memory as long as all those who knew him live on.
You will all be sad and shed some tears, but, "don't cry because he is gone, smile because he was here"
Enjoy Tom's celebration of life ... it sure was a fine one.
Kindest regards,
Francie and Paul Martin
