While Tommy was playing football at SMU I would sometimes have the pleasure to chat with him at the SMU gym. Always an absolutely lovely, pleasant person. I discovered his parents, Gerard & Nancy lived in our neighborhood and would chat once in awhile, and catch up on what Tommy was doing. It was wonderful to hear when Tommy secured a position with HPD.
It was with great shock & sadness that we heard of Tommy’s passing.
Both Linda & I extend our deepest sympathy to Gerard, Nancy & Elizabeth

Tommy’s family:
My condolences on Tommy’s passing. It certainly is a sad and difficult time in your lives. I remember my conversations with Gerard and how proudly he spoke of his son and daughter. My words can’t ease the sorrow and sadness you’re feeling, my heart aches for you all as a parent myself. Keep your happier and fond memories close to your hearts. Tommy thank you for your service. I unfortunately am unable to attend Tommy’s celebration of life as I’m outta country.

Such a tragic loss to all who knew Tommy. He will never be forgotten. I send this message to his loving family, holding them in my heart with love and deepest sympathy:
The Black Umbrella
Long after the mourners have gone home,
When the dust has settled and the seasons changed,
Loss seems to us a solitary preoccupation.
It seems as though we walk beneath a black umbrella
While life, irrevocably changed for us,
Busy, full and hurried, goes on for those around us.
But beneath our black umbrella,
Unseen, in comforting silence,
Are those who care, those who love us,
Walking forever at our sides, in quiet understanding,
Holding us up until we are strong enough
To let go the black umbrella
And feel the sun fall, once again,
Upon our shoulders,
Its touch comforting us,
Its radiance drying our tears,
Wrapping us in the warm blanket of memory.

I will forever be grateful to have known Tommy, along with all of the humour, joy and fun that he brought to all. I first met Tommy when he was a grade 6 student at Westmount School. I was his student teacher. I remember him being one of the kindest and hard-working students in the class, with just the right amount of mischief mixed in. His shy smile lit up the room. After teaching I moved on to Bryony House where I was employed for more than two decades. I remember the first time our paths crossed there, both of us smiling and turning a little red in the cheeks as we figured out how to address one another. Tommy’s kindness and the care he demonstrated for others will live on forever.

I did not have the good fortune to know or work with Tommy but I knew and worked with his Dad, Gibby for many years. While Gibby - or anyone else - wouldn't be surprised that I described him as a "crotchety old (insert bad word here)" his demeanor always changed when he mentioned his then boy/young fella. Much like my Dad, his gruff exterior would disappear for just a second and his face would light up. He was a proud Dad. My deepest condolences to you, Gib and to all who loved Tommy. I'm so terribly sorry for your loss and pain.

Tommy brought light into any room he walked into. He was the big little brother on 1 Watch and you knew if you went to a call and Tommy was there, you were going to have some laughs along the way. How he was able to unfold those arms and legs out of a patrol car is beyond me!
The truth is, there are no words that can properly capture who Tommy was to us all other than to say we love him and will miss him. Please know we are all surrounding you with love and unwavering support at this time.

I had the privilege of working with Tom for years on 1 Watch West. Tom backed me up on many calls for service and knew what to do without being asked. He was an intelligent, caring officer to those he worked with and the public he served. Tom was a breath technician to our watch, and on many occasions, he'd hear the impaired driving call, monitor it, and upon arrest would self dispatch to act as the breath tech. He helped me out countless times with my impaired files, always had his notes ready and text on the file. We were just in court on one last week. He calmed my nerves before I went to testify, and was ready to do his part. I will greatly miss his steady professionalism and kind demeanor. I'm heart broken at his sudden passing. Matthew and I extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones.
