Obituary of Grant Smith
Please share a memory of Grant to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Arthur “Grant” Smith, of St. Margaret’s Bay passed away peacefully on January 31, 2024 at the Halifax Infirmary, just 2 days shy of his 86th birthday. Born in Halifax, NS he was the son of Arthur Balcom and Janet Alexandrina (Short) Smith.
Grant discovered his passion later in life when he was introduced to sailing. He was happiest when onboard his sailboat “Terrica” cruising or racing in beautiful St. Margaret’s Bay. Grant started his career in the car business but went on to be a successful entrepreneur, owning Atlantic Venetian Blinds and Draperies Ltd for three decades. Despite his shift in focus, Grant remained a loyal Ford man to the very end. Grant spent his later years spending time with his grandchildren, sailing, playing bridge, scaring the geese, feeding his crows, and talking at length to whomever would listen.
Grant is survived by his daughter, Taira (Matt) Butler; his son, Eric (Lisa MacKenzie) Smith; and 5 grandchildren, Sam, Isabelle, Elias, Ria, and Evelyn; his brother, Ross (Barbara) Smith; his sister-in-law, Brenda (Steve) Boudreau and many loved nieces and nephews.
Grant was predeceased by his wife, Patricia (Fancey); his brothers, Alexander (Ina) Smith, David (Suzanne) Smith; and his sister-in-law, Barbara Murphy.
No visitation will be held. A Celebration of Life will take place on Feb. 11th 12-3 pm at the St. Margaret Sailing Club.
