MCINTYRE, John Laughlin
1941-2023
Glace Bay, N.S.
It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of John McIntyre, 82, announce his passing on December 26, 2023. After months of battling heart issues, John passed away peacefully in his sleep in the Glace Bay General Hospital.
John was the second-born child of the late Allen and Jennifer (MacNeil) McIntyre. Orphaned at a young age, he was separated from his brother, Allie, and raised by his paternal grandparents. When John was 18 years old, he left his grandparents’ home and followed his brother to Ontario, where he stayed for most of his life.
It was in Ottawa that he met his wife, Cathy.
After a lengthy career working at Dominion Store (Loblaws), John started working for Toronto Transit Commission as a streetcar driver. This was a position he loved, and excelled at, as he was incredibly extroverted and friendly. No one could walk away from a conversation with John without a smile on their face.
In 2014, John retired from TTC and moved home to Cape Breton to be close with his brother and family. He became a member of the Glace Bay Legion and volunteered at the Savoy Theater and Miners Museum.
John will be remembered for his amazing work ethic, friendly smile, teasing jokes, and deep love of his family.
John will be sadly missed by his surviving family, stepdaughter Katrina, nephew Michael (Carla) and niece, Debbie, as well as his grand-nephew Devon, and grand-nieces, Breanna, Samantha, and Jessica, and great-grand-niece, Stevie.
His close friend, Audrey, will also miss their (multiple) daily phone calls and weekend drives.
Besides his parents and grandparents, John was predeceased by his wife Cathy, as well as his brother Allan, sister-in-law, Hughena, and niece, Alana.
The family would like to extend our thanks to the nurses and doctors who attended to our uncle and were there to help us support him in his last days. A massive thank you to John's companion Audrey, who spent hours a day at his side while he was in hospital.
There will be no visitation. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am on Saturday, January 13, 2024, in Holy Cross Parish with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Reception to immediately follow that service in the church hall.
