Obituary of Shirley Marie MacNeil

Please share a memory of Shirley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Shirley MacNeil (McMullen), Dominion, NS Sept. 22, 1933 – Sept. 25, 2023 Shirley passed away peacefully at Seaview Manor on Monday after a brief deterioration in her health. Her entire family sat with her daily and prayed the rosary. She had the Sacrament of the Sick beautifully offered by Father Norman MacPhee on her 90th birthday, and for which the family will be forever grateful. Shirley was born in Dominion, the fourth of ten children, to Michael P. and Effie (Rambeau) McMullen. She spent most of her life on Neville Street but lived for a number of years in Toronto. She had a varied and challenging work life. She worked as a supervisor for the phone company, at the Federal Bank of Canada in Toronto, as constituency office manager for Father Andy Hogan, M.P., and as an assistant in bed utilization at Saint Joseph’s Hospital and the General Hospital in Glace Bay. Shirley raised three children as a single mother and they - like her house, car, yard, and garden - were brought by her efforts to an impeccable shine. She was truly the center of her large extended family, hosting gatherings for Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and countless birthdays. Her cooking and baking were superb, and her generosity renowned (especially her fudge). Need something mended, varnished, dyed, repaired, or a bird or flower identified? Call Shirley. Shirley was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish in Bridgeport, supported her church, and fervently kept her Catholic Faith throughout her life. Her tribulations were met with courage and hope, the tribulations of others with charity, and her life’s purpose was founded on prayer, especially the rosary, and her faith and hope in God. Her leaving us is a profound sadness and she will be deeply missed by her children, Michelle Scott (Dave) Glace Bay; Mike, Dominion; and Frank (Carole) Sudbury; her sisters, Betty, Dominion; Isabelle, Hill Side, Mira; Marilyn Sutherland (Ron, deceased), Sydney; Dolores MacKenzie (Donnie, deceased), Cole Harbour; Ann Boyle (Pat), Glace Bay; Monica (John Rogers), Glace Bay; her brother, Winston (Jessie), Front Lake Road; her brother-in-law, Cyril Davis, Toronto; her grandchildren, Colin and Christina, and their children. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their children. She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Joseph; her sister, Mary Davis (Cyril); and her brothers-in-law, Donnie MacKenzie, and Ron Sutherland. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St, Glace Bay, 902-849-4199. Visitation will be held on Monday, Oct. 2, 2023, from 3-5 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be concelebrated at Immaculate Conception Church in Bridgeport on Tuesday, Oct 3, at 11 a.m., with Father Danny Boudreau and Father Norman MacPhee.
