We lost a husband, father, grandfather, and brother, he was our protector, provider, our biggest supporter, our storyteller, and entertainer. Mike was the youngest child of the late John and Catherine (McManus) MacDonald. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his sisters Catherine (Jim), Florence (Carl), Mary Margaret and brother John (Anne) and nephews Jay, Robert and Tommy. Left to mourn are his loving wife of 54 years Ursula (Currie), his daughters Michelle (Dave), Melissa (Keith), Maegan (Jeremy), son Bob (Michelle) and his pride and joy his eight grandchildren who idolized their Papa: Kailey (Luis), Michael, Patrick, Evan, Makayla, Jake, Kenzie and Cole. And brother Doug (Tootsie) and many nieces and nephews. Mike started his working career at a young age with Upper Lake Shipping. He spent 33 years working for Nova Scotia Power in various positions as a high-pressure welder, safety officer and administrator of the IBEW/NSP Labour Pool until 2002. Mike was a proud and active member of the IBEW Local 1928. He served as Business Manager of the local from 2002 until his retirement in 2010. In 1970 Ursula gifted Mike his first German Shepherd, little did she know the addiction she started. Mike was well known in the dog world throughout Canada, US and Germany. He accomplished many milestones over the 54 years in the sport for Cape Breton and Nova Scotia. He and Ursula made many trips to Germany to attend the World Sieger show featuring the top German Shepherds in the world. Mike was a founding member of the Cape Breton German Shepherd Dog Club and remained an active member until his passing. Mike loved to entertain family and friends with his singing, guitar playing and storytelling, whether it be at a family gathering, union function or hallway somewhere, Mike would be the main attraction. He shared this passion with fellow musician Gerald AuCoin where they would volunteer their time playing at several nursing homes in the area. The family with like to extend a big thank-you to the extraordinary nurses and doctors on Three East at Glace Bay Hospital, also Brett Gillis (our guardian angel) with Palliative Care, last but not least Cathy and her team for the amazing care and compassion they all have shown to Mike (Da) over the last few months.
