My deepest condolences to my cousin Nancy and her family. I am at a loss for words to express my sorrow upon hearing of Christa's passing. We were both hockey fans and when they were playing and my team Boston Bruins won or lost, Christa always came back with a reply. If I saw something she had and I liked it, she would always let me know the ins and outs of getting one. Rest in peace and fly high, you are now free to do as you please and not tied to a bed, she was so excited to tell me she was getting a motorized wheelchair.
Claudia, Basil & Michael

It's not often I am at a loss for words, but I have been this past week. This is really hard. It's true what they say...you don't know what you've got until it's gone. At the tender age of 44, my childhood best friend (who was more like a sister) was stolen from us by complications of type 1 diabetes. I remember the day she fainted and we didn't know what happened, although I don't remember exactly how old she was...but, she was just a little kid. I remember her Mom and Dad bringing me to visit her in the hospital during her diagnosis. I remember how brave she was as she was poked & prodded by endless needles. Wanting to run and play and eat whatever she wanted, but stuck in a hospital bed instead. Christa's diabetes was bad...really bad...bad enough to require a kidney transplant and other major complications like strokes, etc. The past few years, she has been confined to a bed, unable to walk due to peripheral issues, her awesome Mom ever at her side caring for her every need always. Christa suffered since she was a kid. But, she never complained. She never felt sorry for herself (unlike me who whines with every ailment). If anyone had a right to wallow in self pity, it would have been Christa, but she never did. She just kept smiling that big smile of hers and continued with her famous belly-laughs..what a giggle she had. I can still hear it. Me, Christa, and her cousin Sandie-lee (McLean) Milley were inseparable as kids running around our neighbourhood (The Hub). We lived across the street from each other. The three of us were like sisters and they are the main reason why my childhood was so awesome. We would walk to and from school together, play together at recess, go skating in the frigid hub park until we couldn't feel our feet, go sledding at Shay's hill, ride our bikes, hang out in the "mini-park", go to the Hub picnic, go swimming on hot summer days at the back shore, go to all the baseball games at the hub park and in table head, hang out in the arcade in the back of Earl Gracie's store and drive the boys crazy by playing "Every breath you take" over and over on the juke box, sleep in the tent in the yard, make "houses" in the elephant ears (for the mainlanders: elephant ears are fields of very tall wild-rhubarb is the best way to describe them and they had these huge leaves on top that looked like an elephant's ear, hence the name, and we would trample them down flat and make "rooms" to play in), we would skip rope and play "elastics" on 5th street, playing for hours in my Da's barn and swinging on the "tow rope", jumping off barns into the snow in the winter, go roller skating on the "good pavement" on Ash road, picking blueberries with our Moms, catch butterflies (while the McLean brothers would catch bees and chase us with them...probably why I'm scared of bees to this day lol), catch pollywogs/tadpoles, go back and forth between Kelly's store and Gracie's store getting penny candy with money the Dads (usually poor Melvin lol) would give us, we would play Nintendo at Sandie's place, we would go to see Santa at the hub club, go to dances at the hub club or to lip sync contests at the radio club, me and Christa played play-doh so much that the smell of play-doh actually reminds me of her...I think of her whenever I smell it. We would go swimming out Mira with Ronnie & Danny...OMG I could go on and on. Every time I think of a memory another one emerges. Colleen (Sandie's Mom) and Nancy Mclean (Christa's Mom) were like bonus Moms to me. They were a shoulder to cry on and a boot in the arse if I needed one. My Mom Glenda Lewis was god mother to both Sandie and Christa. The families in The Hub all moved there when the coal mines opened at the turn of the century, and it's mostly been the same families there ever since. So, to say all the families in the Hub were/are like one big family is an understatement (Kirk's - my husband- father grew up across the street from me, so I've known his family forever too), so whenever we lose someone from one of these key families (McLeans, McCormicks, Lewis's, Roach's, Bradburys, MacDonald's, Gracie's, etc) it hits us all very hard. We were/are as tight knit as you can get. What a blessing it was to grow up in a community like that. I tried my best to raise my kids like that to the best of my ability within the dysfunction of our military lifestyle...but, it's not even close. The Hub in the 80s was truly awesome. It was a very special place.
Christa and her mother Nancy were, as she describes it, "soulmates"...and I'm crying again...*deep breath*. Nancy and Christa buried their brother/son Robert and their Dad/husband Melvin...and now Nancy has to bury Christa and my heart is shattered for Nancy. Life can be so cruel sometimes. But, the blessings remain...they are named Hailey (Robert's daughter) and Jeremy (Christa's son). The 2 jewels in the McLean crown. Jeremy, I will never forget how excited your mom was when she found out she was pregnant with you. She was all smiles...and you have her smile. You were her everything. You were so loved and she is still loving you from heaven. She will watch over you and your Nanny every day as you both find the courage to move forward with your grief. You both have a new guardian angel. This is not fair, but you have your unified Hub family(s) to help you through. We love you so much.
Christa, we will miss you so much. I'm so grateful I got to see you last month when I was home for my Aunt's funeral. Rest In Peace with your Dad and brother. No more highs, no more lows, no more pain, no more needles...your health has been fully restored and you are soaring with the angels. Watch over us, sweet friend.

I'm so sorry to hear of Christa's passing. I lived in the hub when I was a child and our Dad's were friends so I have known her my whole life. She was the biggest Montreal fan I knew. She loved my fudge and I enjoyed her company when I delivered it. Will never forget your Chris. Both your Dad and brother were waiting for you. xoxo. Condolences to Jeremy and Nancy and all her family and friends.

Nancy and family , I’m so sorry for you all, life can be hard at times.Hugs to you all. I remember being at the Hub Club visiting Santa one year, she told Santa she saw his reindeer on the roof, she was so excited!! It is a memory I’ll always remember about her, over the years I reminded her of it, she laughed every time❤️
