It is with regret that we, the family of Fr. Leo Boone announce his passing at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on May 2, 2022, in his 73rd year. Born on December 11, 1948, he was the son of the late Olive and James Boone.
Father Leo attended school in Dominion. He received a BA from St. Mary’s University, Halifax. He attended St. Augustine Seminary in Scarborough, Ontario. He was ordained a Priest by Bishop William E. Power at St. Anne’s Church in Glace Bay, on May 18, 1980.
Father Leo was an assistant of St. Theresa’s Parish in Sydney. He was named Parish Priest at St. Joseph’s Port Felix and St. Vincent De Paul in Queensport, NS in 1984. Since that time, he was appointed parish priest in St. Joseph’s, New Victoria, St. Alphonsus, Victoria Mines, St. Anthony Daniel, Sydney, St. Anne’s, Membertou, St. Pius X, Sydney Mines, St. Anne’s Glace Bay, St. Leo’s Glace Bay, St. John’s the Baptist, Glace Bay. He retired from parish ministry in 2017. He was also Chaplain and State Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus.
Father Leo was predeceased by his parents, sister, Gladys, brothers, John, and Leonard.
He leaves to mourn his brother, Aubrey (Josie), Dartmouth, NS; sisters, Ann (Bernard) MacIsaac, Ottawa, Alice (George) Short, Port aux Basques, NL; sisters-in-law, Kenzie Boone and Kaye Boone as well as many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and grand nephews.
Special thank you to the city homemakers, VON, doctors and the nurses of the Glace Bay Hospital and Cape Breton Regional Hospital for your care. A special thank you to Father Jim Oliver who was ordained with Father Leo in St. Anne’s in Glace Bay.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Father Leo’s memory to the Cape Breton Palliative Care or to a charity of choice.
The vigil will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2022, at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay at 7:00 p.m. continuing until 9 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, May 6, 2022, in St. Anne’s Church, Main St., Glace Bay with Most Reverend Wayne Joseph Kirkpatrick presiding. Interment will follow in St. Eugene’s Cemetery, Dominion.
