Sheila Ann Gardiner, 60
Glace Bay, N.S.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sheila Ann Gardiner, age 60, of Glace Bay, on December 18th, 2024, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Wilson and Lillian (Deering) Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Glenn, her son, Justin and daughter-in-law Liz, her son, Quentin (at home), her grandson, Grayson, her “fur babies” Cash and Lily, her father-in-law, George Gardiner, her sisters, Betty (Peter), Dorothy (John), Mary (Greg), her “sister by choice” Gail, her brothers, John “Dewey” (Marie), Jim (Jayney, her dearest friend), Robert (Dean), many beloved nieces and nephews, and her aunt Florence (godmother), and uncle Mannie.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Susie Campbell, Violet “Sissy” Strong, Lillian “Bubby” O’Handley, brother, Wilson Smith Jr and nephew, Tom O’Handley.
A wonderful wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend and most recently, grandmother. Her beloved grandson, Grayson, was the joy of her life. He was a precious gift and a piece of her heart will be with him forever.
Sheila worked with the VON for many years, a position she held with pride.
Sheila enjoyed being with her family, having a coffee with her sisters, Friday nights at the gazebo, or spending time at the Table Head shore. Sheila loved being by the water. She would spend hours walking the shore searching for sea glass — each piece beautiful and unique but some more special than others. Some of the pieces she found were even award winning!
With these individual treasures, Sheila created art that touched the hearts of everyone around her. Whether it was a piece of framed art, a Christmas decoration or a unique gift for a special occasion, her crafts told a story of love and creativity for anyone lucky enough to receive one. To those who knew her, her work was not just beautiful, but so meaningful, reflecting the care she took selecting each piece of glass to create special treasures.
Sheila will be remembered for her love of the ocean, but most importantly for her kindness, generosity, patience and the way she brought warmth to everyone she met. She had a quiet strength and a heart full of compassion, always ready to listen or offer a kind word. Her memory will live on in the many people she has touched and in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Sheila’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Adams, Dr. Saliba and Dr. Lazovskis, as well as Dr. Landry, Dr. Lowry and the nursing staff at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sheila’s memory can be made to the Table Head Development Society.
A gathering of family and friends will take place for a memorial service at TJ Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists.
