James 'Jimmy' Currie, 69
Glace Bay, N.S.
It is with shattered hearts that we the family announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend James 'Jimmy' Bernard Currie at the age of 69. Jimmy passed away peacefully at home in Glace Bay on October 10, 2024, with his loving wife and family by his side after a fight with cancer.
Anyone who knew Jimmy knew that he was a worker, as a teenager he worked and learned from his father Cecil, the trade that would carry him through his life, Carpentry. Jimmy moved out west for a short time working in the mines and wash houses and then made his way back home where he worked for numerous companies through the years. The last job of 13 years was with Falcon Realty. He loved going to work every day to see the “boys” and the tenants, he came home with a story, a smile and even sometimes pictures.
The Seton Foundation held a special place in Jimmy’s heart with the calls from Bill, Nancy, and Malcolm with the “we have an empty house for you to do.” Jimmy was always there for anyone that needed his help, which in turn ended with you helping him.
Jimmy loved sports and competition especially darts with as many as 180 trophies and triple 19’s was “his number”. Washer toss was always exciting to watch and listen too…. many words were used. Beer pong was very serious with T-shirts made and names on them, and always a trophy to the winner.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 25 years Norma Jean, three stepsons Christopher, Collin (Mary), Jarrot (April); daughter Amanda “Mandy” Walker. Grandchildren Victoria, Robyn, Catherine, Brady, Jeremiah and ex-wife and friend Donna Walker also a special little girl Miley Russel who never left Jimmy without giving hugs and kisses and his “little man” Mason Currie who brought so much love and happiness to Jimmy he always had pictures and stories to show his buddies of Mason growing up.
He is also survived by his sisters Marcella Brekka, Calgary, Linda (David), Dominion, brother Johnny “Cooke,” Glace Bay, as well as his very special mother-in-law Shirley who loved him like her own. Also surviving Jimmy is sisters-in-law Deanna (Bruce) Hennessey, Frances, and Shirley Marie (Billy). He will be missed by his furry friend Bubbles.
He was predeceased by his parents Cecil and Kathleen “Kay” (MacDonald), sisters Pauline and Joan Lorraine (in infancy), brothers Darrell Thomas (in infancy), Cecil, and Darrell with whom he will be laid to rest along side, brother-in-law Joe Brekka, and father-in-law Francis “Dinky” Currie.
Visitation will be held Wednesday October 16, 2024, 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. with a memorial service to held on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at 2 p.m. with Father Danny Boudreau officiating reception to follow all in T.J. Tracey Funeral Home, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Bridgeport.
Donations can be made to the Cancer Society in honor of Jimmy. All flowers are welcome.
Special thanks to all the VON nurses particularly, Sherry Mugford-Burke for your warmth and compassion, Palliative care nurse Linda Murphy who was always happy and full of love, she stopped in all the time just to check on him, sat in the bed with him, he always said “call and ask Linda.” Also, to all his friends far and wide, especially Robbie MacKinnon, he was loved by so many there’s not enough paper to include everyone.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to TJ Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, Reserve Street Glace Bay.
