Terry Canning, 81
Reserve Mines, N.S.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Terry Canning, a beloved father, friend, and sports enthusiast, who left us on October 1, 2024, at the age of 81. Terry, aka, Pop, was a man, who lived, first and foremost, for his family. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for them. As a father, Terry shared this love with his children, teaching them the values and importance of family.
Terry was born on March 7, 1943, in Sydney, NS. His passion and talent for playing sports began to bloom in his early days as a competitive hockey player and was a prospect for junior league hockey. Terry also had an immense joy for watching any type of sport and sharing his play-by-play commentaries with those he loved and with those around him. He was a Cape Breton Eagles season ticket holder for many years and seldom missed a game. Many games were filled with laughter and spirited debates. His enthusiasm for sports was not just about enjoying the game; it was about the connections, being together and making memories along the way.
Terry also enjoyed coaching baseball at various levels in his earlier years and in his later years, watching the Blue Jays with his good friend and roommate, Simon Hill. He embraced every opportunity to attend, watch and commentate any game that was playing. Pop also had a keen interest and determination in solving crossword puzzles and reading the daily Chronicle Harold and the “Post Record.”
Terry is survived by his three children, Gerard (Tane) Victoria BC, Raylene (Bernie) New Victoria NS and Gery Markie (Karen) Oakville Ont. who will forever honor his passion and his unwavering love. He is survived by his grandchildren, Cindy, Robin, Dakota, Keagan, and Ryann and his great grandchildren Brayden, Isaac, and Emilia, who brought immense joy to his life.
Terry was predeceased by his loving and devoted wife Jerry, who he loved dearly, and is waiting for him with opened arms. He was also predeceased by his mother Elsie (Matheson) Canning, his father Ervin Canning, and his only sister Laney Walker.
A memorial service celebrating his life and love for his family will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in Bridgeport on Monday, October 7, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. All who knew Pop are invited to share stories, laughter, and the spirit of any game that he cherished so deeply.
Rest in peace Pop and play on. Your love for your family and sports will be remembered and will live in our hearts and lives forever!
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Society.
