Mom was an interpreter at Pier 21 helping process Italian immigrants into Canada with her Monsigneur and others from the Catholic Church. Lacking daycare, I was simply plopped in the waiting halls to play with the children of arriving families. Standing on the austere wooden benches, the sight of gleaming white ocean liners towering far above the warehouse left me imagining what was within these giant machines and what voyages at sea were all about. Not long afterward, you became a Brown Owl and I attended Brownies with all the neighbourhood girls. I learned about duty as we stood around the toadstool and recited the Brownie Promise, “I promise to do my best, to do my duty to God, the Queen and my country, to help other people every day, especially those at home.” I kept you company as we drove the city during dad’s absences at sea to shop at the Capitol Store and Fisherman's Market, I would recite knitting instructions from the Vogue Knitting Book so you could knit as you drove - knit 1, knit 1 below, pearl 2 and on and on we went bumping through old Halifax, never a moment to be lost in your busy life, another article of clothing for family or friend. I especially loved our trips down Lower Water Street to pay our oil bill. Through the Irving arch, the world of the port opened up, hard working tugs, dock workers, wharf rats and the smell of ships, tar and galley odours. There are many more memory vignettes like these that made me who I am today. They are all warm and inspiring and enough to last a lifetime. I miss you mom and indeed I love you. Little John

I met Esvelda via Ross and Isabelle Ainslie at Ski Wentworth. She was Always very kind, with a twinkle in her eyes and the biggest smile. I have never met a single person who had an unkind word to say about her.
My fondest memory of Esvelda was the last day I skied with her. John was no longer able to ski. Esvelda had just (more or less) recovered from a shoulder injury. Esvelda said if she could use her poles, she would ski. John quickly said “Chick you do not need poles!! Just ski straight down!!!” Up she goes and let’s say she waited for us at the bottom for another two runs!
She was amazing in every way

It was sad to hear of Esvelda's passing we all lived on Kearney Lake Road and was very good friends with my Mom Frances (Fran). Unfortunately I was away on business and was unable to attend the funeral. My Mom also made stuffed animals and all of them typically shared a booth at Christmas time with all of their wares. After my Mom passed 8 years ago I had moved out of the area and sadly lost touch I so wish I was able to see her during that time. Rest in Peace Esvelda you will always be thought of fondly.

Don and I extend heartfelt condolences to Esvelda's family on their great loss. They can take pride in her courage and fortitude and in their own constant support. Our own emotions range from a great sense of loss to gratitude in having such a friend for so many years. That friendship commenced almost six decades ago with my entry into a "Neighborhood Bridge Club" that continues to this day. Esvelda's last bridge game was this March 14th at our home. Typically, Esvelda had high score highlighted by the only "slam" of the day.! To further highlight our memory of that day she accepted our invitation for dinner, before Don drove her home. As pleasing as the many social interactions with John and Esvelda were , the most personal was our partnering in the design and creation of stained glass crafts highlighted by years of completing the collections of our personal customers while selling as a team from our booth at the annual "Christmas At The Forum" craft show. Although we were scrupulous in sharing efforts and rewards from the sales, I readily admit that Esvelda was a superior saleslady! She was and will remain a dear friend. Don and I were privileged to help in small ways in her desire to stay in the home she loved so much.

I first met Esvelda at Ski Wentworth some 20 or so years ago. She and her dear friend Bonnie "adopted" my friend Art and I ("Her boys", and many a day the 4 of us could be seen skiing down the slopes. She was truly a beautiful person and a treasure to count as a friend. Her love of life and her family and her friends was exceptional. I hold dear the great memories in Wentworth and the few visits to her home in Bedford.

Auntie Esvelda was a beautiful woman inside and out. We have many happy memories of the “East Coast” Newton’s visits to St. Marys over the years. Aunt Esvelda would make sure we were updated on what was going on with her family. She was so proud of her children , grand children and great grand children. What a mentor and teacher she was…..you are all very fortunate.
We think of her often, especially at Christmas when we unwrap and display our stained glass nativity presepio. We will always remember her and her radiant smile.

My sincere sympathy to Esvelda's family. She was a remarkable woman who left special memories in the hearts of everyone she met.
I first met Esvelda when I volunteered on the YWCA garden tours. When this beautiful woman entered a garden even the flowers turned their heads to gaze. No wonder a rose was named in her honour.
Esvelda made the world a better place.

Esvelda my beautiful, brilliant friend. Her book has closed leaving us with all the memories of wonderful times spent together. Esvelda was a mentor to me, a second mom to both my daughters. We shared the love of crafts, skiing and gardening and the joy of spending time together.
Esvelda knew every Latin name for plants and loved sharing her knowledge. She glowed talking of her family and so proud of all of them.
Esvelda had that wonderful smile that lit up her eyes, putting that impish gleam in them saying there is more to me than you see. And there certainly was. RIP with John

I met Esvelda when I lived in Wentworth. She became a very valued member of our garden club. In conversation, she told me she was from St. Mary's, ON , and we discovered we had mutual friends from that town. Her contributions to gardening were endless and members enjoyed visits to her and John's home. She had a wicked sense of humor and kept us laughing with stories such as the one where she was locked in the garden shed. Her talents were many and I will always cherish the stained glass pieces she gave me; also floral photos her son took. a beautiful lady inside and out. RIP, Esvelda. Shirley Rushton, Amherst, NS

I feel so blessed to have shared some tasty moments with Esvelda via Beth Guptill. Her delight in often spicy concoctions and varied offerings from my weekly menus was so gratifying. I especially loved making her a Christmas Eve gift of Lobster Chowder - my way of saying thank you to this marvellous human. She also had a soft spot for my Raspberry & Vanilla Jam. I will think of her fondly as I continue to make these items in the future. My heart goes out the the family. Meredith (Ma) Bell

I’m so thankful for good, faithful and loving mothering. Mom was a legend in her own time. She started a Brownie pack so Julie and I could go to Brownies. Mom made the best picnics. I also want to add Daryl Church, Grace Warnica and Judith Rupchan for all the help they gave Mom and all the neighbours that kept an eye on her.
