Mac Neil, John Wayne, 70, of Halifax. It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the family of John Wayne Mac Neil announce his passing on March 22, 2024. Born October 12, 1953 in Detroit, Michigan, John was the son of John Roderick and Catherine Mary Mac Neil (Mac Donnell).
John grew up in Port Hood, Cape Breton from early pre-school age. During his early years growing up in Port Hood, he enjoyed learning to skate and play scrimmage hockey on the different ponds and outdoor rinks and the harbour, just minutes from where he lived.
During school years he continued playing hockey and playing ball, as a pitcher, as well as after school years, he kept up with NHL news, having 3 relatives playing in the NHL.
After high school John attended St. Francis Xavier University for one year where he excelled in mathematics. John then attended Canso Regional Vocational School in 1976, where he studied Industrial Instrumentation, achieving meritorious standing for the highest achievement in a 2-year program.
John moved out to Edmonton, Alberta where he obtained work in his field of study and gained hands on experience. He enjoyed the comradeship amongst his workers from Cape Breton as well as other parts of Canada. He was highly respected in his field.
Throughout his lifetime, John had fond memories of getting together with friends and relatives and having music sessions, playing guitar and sing-a-longs.
John is survived by his brothers, Christopher (Rebecca) Mac Neil, Curtis Mac Neil; and his sister, Sandra Mac Neil.
We’ll meet again somewhere sometime where the sun always shines. Rest In Peace.
