Obituary of Michael Stephen Oliver

Please share a memory of Michael to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Michael Stephen Oliver (76) passed away peacefully on January 13, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Michael, known to most as Mike, was born to Michael and Eileen Oliver on August 2, 1947, in Montreal, Quebec. Mike loved life. He was a skilled sailor and scuba diver who always longed to be on the ocean, whether it was touring the Gulf Islands in British Columbia or sailing the Florida Keys. That was his happy place. An avid traveller, he always had his eyes set on the next adventure with his wife, Marty. Amidst all his passions, his greatest was his children. An extraordinary father, Mike was a constant presence in the lives of his three daughters, Janet (Jenny), Stephanie, and Meghan. He never missed a school concert, a swim meet, or a ballet recital. As life's currents shifted, Mike and Marty embarked on a new chapter, leaving White Rock, BC, for Halifax to join their children who had all ventured east. This was where he found the light of his later years, the laughter and love of his grandchildren Violet and August. From his youth to his last days, Mike was known for his love of life. All who were privileged to know him experienced his warmth, charm, and generosity. He was always our biggest support. He loved to tinker, build and fix, and was always working on a project. He was happiest when eating good food surrounded by his loud, boisterous family and being near the ocean as much as possible. He will be so deeply missed by his loved ones. Mike is survived by his wife, Marty, and three daughters, Jenny, Stephanie and Meghan Oliver; his son-in-law, David Hung; and his grandchildren, Violet and August Hung. He is also survived by his brother, Stewart, and his wife Carmela, along with his nephew, Jason Oliver, and niece, Louise Benoit. Mike was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Eileen, and his younger brother David. Mike’s family and friends will be travelling to Saltspring Island, BC, this summer to spread his ashes in his favourite cove, where he had some of his fondest memories with his family. His family wants to thank the Heart and Stroke Foundation for their years of support in helping Mike. In place of flowers, please consider donating in his name to Hospice Halifax. His family is forever grateful for the incredible care, comfort and dignity that the team at Hospice Halifax provided to Mike and his family during his last days. It is truly a special place. Rest peacefully, sweet Michael, ya ol’ salt. We know you are by the ocean, happy in the sun. Thank you for being our guiding light. We love you and know you’re always with us.
