Obituary of Jean Isabell Sutcliffe

Jean Isabell Leslie Sutcliffe of Halifax, NS passed away peacefully on December 13, 2023 at the age of 96. Born in Grindstone, Magdalen Islands, Quebec. Jean moved to Halifax in her late teens to attend Halifax Ladies College, Kings Edgehill and Queen Elizabeth High School. She went on to graduate in nursing from Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Quebec. In 1951, Jean married her husband of 59 years, Edward Henry. For many years, Jean was a dedicated volunteer at the IWK Childrens Hospital. She was also a long-term member of the Halifax Curling Club and represented the club as skip on the women’s team and mate on the mixed team. Jean was a loyal member of the Waegwoltic Club and the St. Margarets Bay Sailing Club. Jean’s favorite place was the family cottage at Mason’s Point, St. Margarets Bay, and spent many days sailing on their boat, JETE. Jean is survived by her children, daughters, Lynn Vernon and Leslie Ferguson; son, Rick (Donna Hughes); grandchildren, Sarah Vernon (Adam), Kristen Harvey (Len), David Vernon (Carolyn), Gabriel Goree, Ainslie Sutcliffe, Richard Sutcliffe, Jennifer and Jean Ferguson. Jean also had several great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, Frank and Isabelle Leslie, seven brothers and three sisters, as well as her husband, Edward Henry; and her son, Edward Grant. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday December 30, 2023, between 1:00pm and 3:00pm in T.J Tracey Cremation & Burial Specialist, 71 McQuade Lake Crescent, Halifax, NS B3S 1C4. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Parker Street Food Bank and Shelter Nova Scotia.
