Oh my goodness, I just found out about Jim's death. My deepest condolences to his loved ones. Jim was a professor in my undergrad and Masters, then quickly became a trusted colleague when I was a sessional instructor. He was always ready to talk teaching! We spent hours over the photocopier in the old SOSA building sharing ideas. Jim was smart, humble, compassionate and caring. He inspired me. In 2000 while I was doing a postdoc in BC he sent me an ad for a job at Dalhousie, one that was an unusual fit. And here I am 23 years later. I saw Jim on the street in the summer of 2022 (?mid-Covid, maybe 2021?) and got one of his trademark massive hugs. I didn't know it would be my last...

I first met Jim Stolzman in 1972 when he was lecturing in the Foundation Year Programme at Kings College. I don’t remember the specific topic but it must have been intriguing because I signed up for two of his second year courses and soon decided to make Sociology my major. Through two degrees, Jim was always there to provide good advice, encouragement and perspective. He always had time for his students and genuine interest in, and concern for, our problems. We met several times in the following years and he always had time for a chat and I always came away refreshed by the conversation. Jim was a very fine person. I know he will be greatly missed by his family, friends and colleagues.

Our deepest condolences. Jim was such a lovely man. His kindness to students and junior colleagues (as well as everyone else), and thoughtfulness about the world were transformative for so many of us. What a legacy that is. Thanks Jim.

Dr. Stolzman was one of my favourite professors at Dalhousie. I took his Sociology of Mental Health class long before it was even OK to talk about mental illness. He was kind, intelligent and Wow did he care about his students.

It was my honour to serve alongside Jim when after retiring from teaching, he took on the role of an undergraduate advisor. You always know when one is doing great work when students specifically asked for Jim and/or would wait until his next appointment availability. Jim was kind and compassionate and always made it a point to leave the space a little better than where it started. Sad news but a life lived well. Condolences to the family and friends.

Professor Stolzman was my favourite professor. I'm sure he was many students' favourite. He was approachable, kind, and he seemed genuinely interested in learning about you, and what you thought. I remember wondering why in the world would a professor care about what a shy 18 year old from a small town thinks about social stratification? But he did care. Thanks for that, Professor Stolzman.

I had the pleasure of taking the class "Thinking and Doing Sociology", from Jim and later had the opportunity to work with him as an academic advisor. I enjoyed his great sense of humor and admired his dedication to helping every student he met. My deepest condolences to his loved ones.

My deep condolences to Jim's partner Willa, his family and friends. From the first time I met him, during my interview in the SOSA department at Dalhousie, he put me at my ease and made me feel supported. He was the one I always turned to for teaching advice, even after he retired. He often gave a guest lecture in my sociology of health classes; he wasn't the flashy type, as many popular teachers are, but students always found his lectures captivating, I think because his deep humanity and his passion for sociology and what it could teach us always came across in the classroom. Listening to him teach made me proud to be a sociologist. I am even prouder to call him my friend.

I completed my MA (Sociology) in 1988 at Dal and though I never took a course from Jim, I was well aware of the level of respect that his coworkers and students had for him. I always remember him as being friendly, had a great smile, and a down to earth approach in his interaction with everyone. There are so so many students that will remember him as one of the best. My sympathy to all his family.
