John Norman “Boozie” McCarthy Glace Bay, NS We the family of John Norman “Boozie” McCarthy regretfully announce his passing at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on June 10, 2023. John was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia and was the son of the late Georgina Jones. John’s first love was fishing, and he worked as a draggerman during his young life until he, like many men of his era sought to make a better living mining coal. He remained a coal miner for 25 years. After the closure of the mines, John worked as a bartender for the rest of his life, making countless friends along the way. John is survived by his daughter Darlene (Todd), son John John (Candee); sisters Donna (Danny) MacLeod, Valerie Jones, and Lorna Jones, brother Victor Jones. Also, left to mourn John are his 6 grandchildren, great grandson and many nieces and nephews. John was pre-deceased by the love of his life Joanne Steele with whom he is now peacefully reunited. John was a huge Boston Bruins fan and loved the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was a well-liked and respected coach at Ring 73 Boxing Club until his passing, John remained athletic throughout his life, continuing to work out daily until he was succumbed by his illness. John also enjoyed playing fastball, darts, and broom ball over the years, he loved to watch local fastball games whenever he could. John was a proud member of Hub Club and Radio Club and was affectionately known for telling stories to anyone that would listen; he was always laughing and telling jokes, most of them corny. The call of the sea will never leave him, and on a regular basis, he spent time down at the wharf enjoying the boats and fraternizing with the fishermen. As per his request cremation has taken place under the care of T.J Tracey’s Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, NS. 902.849.4199. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 16, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., and a Celebration of Life at 11:00 a.m., with Fr. Daniel Boudreau presiding. Reception to follow.
