Christine J. Aucoin
Reserve Mines, NS
It is with heavy hearts that we, her family, announce the passing of our dear Mother, Christine Aucoin, on Friday, January 13, 2023, at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay. She was 97 years old.
Born in Reserve Mines, on April 15, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Annie Aucoin. She resided in Reserve Mines until the passing of her late husband, Charlie Aucoin, after which she moved in with her son Brian and wife, the late Diane Aucoin. In 2009, she moved to the Taigh Na Mara nursing home.
Christine grew up in the Lorway, Reserve Mines, until 1943, when she joined the RCAF WD (Women’s Division). Chris was very proud of her service in the military and served as an upholsterer finishing war planes getting ready for deployment. She was honourably discharged in 1946 and returned home in April of that year. In August she married her husband, Charlie Aucoin, who had served overseas during the war.
Christine was a devout Catholic, and a member of St., Joseph’s Parish, Reserve Mines and later a member of St. Anne’s Parish, in Glace Bay. She was a proud member of the choir at St. Anne’s and was a long-time member of the Carmelite Lay order and took her membership very seriously. She was also a member of Branch 3 Legion, Glace Bay.
Chris and Charlie enjoyed a good party and loved to dance. Chris was also a regular at the skating events held at various rinks at the time. Even now those who remember her recall that she was a great dancer and skater. Until the age of 94, she attended the Remembrance Day ceremony at Branch 3 Legion as she always did and danced for hours and could still jitterbug, although by her own admission, she was starting to slow down.
Christine was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She is survived by all of her children; four sons; Brian (Terry), Glace Bay, Derrick (Kathy), Dartmouth, Darrell (Kathy), Halifax, Carl (Louella), Halifax, and two daughters; Anne (Jerry) Dillon, Lawrencetown, and Patrice (Keith) MacVicar, Upper Grand Mira. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren Brad, Kyle, Jeff, Michelle, Katie, Amanda, Andrea, Charlie, Stephen, Sean, Ryan, Neal, Colin, Garrett, Andrew, and Lauren, as well as her favourite pet, Bailey. As well, she is survived by 25 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Chris is also survived by one sister, Mary MacDonald, Victoria, BC, and sister-in-law Theresa Aucoin and long-time friend, Charlotte Cameron.
Chris was predeceased by her husband, Charlie (1991), as well as brothers: Leo (Elizabeth), Paddy (Isabelle), Eddy (Maryellen), Wallace, and three sisters: Lillian (Pat) Ellsworth, Rita (Jim) O’Donnell, and Dorothy (Frank) Gallant; her brother-in-law John MacDonald, and daughter-in-law, Diane (Currie) Aucoin. She was also predeceased by sisters-in-law: Annie Rose (Jack) Young and Lucy (Joe) LeBlanc.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. MacLean and the Staff at Taigh Na Mara, where she felt very comfortable and was treated very well. Their care and compassion were very much appreciated by the family.
