Obituary of Basil John MacDonald

1930 - 2022 John Basil MacDonald Glace Bay/North Sydney It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dad John Basil MacDonald, age 92 on Tuesday April 5, 2022, at Taigh Solas Nursing Home in North Sydney. Born in Glace Bay, Basil was the son of the late John Thomas & Florence (Strang) MacDonald. Dad grew up in Gardiner Mines, and later left for Toronto to stay with his brother Lloyd and wife Marguerite. He the met his future wife Effie Morris, married, and raised two daughters (Denise and Deborah) in Toronto/Oakville, Ontario. Dad worked at Goodyear Tire in Toronto until his retirement in 1988 and the family then moved back home to Glace Bay. Dad loved playing the guitar and fiddle, going for walks, and loved to tell a good story. Basil is survived by his children Denise (Glace Bay) and Deborah (Julian) (Mississauga). Also surviving is his sister Evelyn Cole, Maureen (Brian) Corbett, Geraldine (Tony) Chiola, sisters-in-law, Marguerite MacDonald, Betty MacDonald and Pricilla MacDonald, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Basil was predeceased by his wife Effie (Morris), brothers, Lloyd, Greg, Gerry, Harold, Eugene; sisters, Joan O'Brien, Shirley Roach and brothers-in-law, Dave Cole, Peter Roach, Henry O'Brien, and Milley MacDonald. The family would like to thank the staff at Taigh Solas Nursing Home in North Sydney who took amazing care of him, and he was happy to be there. A private funeral service will be held at TJ Tracey Funeral Home & Cremation Centre at a later date.
