Florence Genevieve Fiander
Louisbourg
Florence Genevieve Fiander, age 82 of Louisbourg, passed away on January 17, 2022, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Little Lorraine, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late William and Libby (Burke) Kennedy. Florence was the youngest of William Kennedy’s children, and the last to leave this earth.
Mom was well known for her smile. In about every photograph she has been in throughout her life, mom was always smiling; she was one of the few people on this earth who never took a bad picture. When it came to children, mom had a special spot in her heart for them and would take the opportunity to spoil them whenever she could.Florence was the peacemaker, the one who took it upon herself to bring people together. Mom used to be a frequent walker until her body started rebelling against her. She would often be seen walking with one of the many dogs she had throughout her life;a lover of animals who often brought home strays. It was not unusual for her to have 2-3 dogs and a couple of cats.
Mom was a person of strong faith and a follower of St. Anne De Beaupre. She taught her children prayers and how to be decent people and was always there for them if we needed her. She bucked the challenges of old age and refused to give into its demands even when those who loved her could see it’s affects wearing away at her. First her hip and then her hearing resulting in many loud conversations at Mom’s place as she refused to get a hearing aid. Mom never thought of herself as old.
Mom was the one who helped me get my first job and when I needed help as a teenager, she was the one who got it for me. Thank you, Mom.
She is survived by her children, Bill (Amy), Byron (Juanita) and Lisa (David); as well as grandchildren, Brianna, Genna and Ling. Mom had a special place in her heart for nieces, Nancy, Ellen and Noel, and her nephew, Bruce. Florence also leaves behind Manuella, her friend and neighbour of over 50 years, and her “angel” Joanne.
Besides her parents, Florence was predeceased by her husband Robert (Gus) Fiander; son, Joseph Gerard; sisters, Agnes MacLeod, and Lillian Burke; brother, Joe Kennedy.
A very special thank you to Unit 4B and Palliative Care of Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
