Weldon Charles Yates Glace Bay It is with profound sadness we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, Weldon Yates, age 74 on Thursday Feb 21, 2019. Born in Glace Bay, NS, on February 13th, 1945, “Weldie” was the son of the late Louis “Duckie” and Margaret (Aucoin) Yates. Weldie was a dedicated Catholic and maintained an unshakeable faith. He was a lifelong member and volunteer (resident handyman) of the former St. Anthony’s Parish. Weldie started his career with the Dominion Coal Company at Broughton.He worked a long career with Devco at many local mines and on security. He retired from the machine shops in 1992. After retirement he completed a goal of obtaining his pilots licence. With his recent diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease, he became actively involved with the Rock Steady Boxing program at Ring 73. Support comes in many forms and he found a tremendous circle of friends and support with this group. He and his loving wife of 48 years the former Joan Blunden, spent endless hoursplaying cards with their friends, planning their much-loved vacations, enjoying family time and searching “the google” for antiques. He was in the process of restoring a 52 Chev. In addition to his wife, our Dad and Pop is survived by his daughter Terry Lynn (Gary) Slaunwhite, son Trevor ( Barb MacQuarrie) Yates; granddaughters Erica (Shawn), Rebecca (Brandyn), Alexis (Pano), Emma and grandsons, Justin, Josh and Riley. He was also blessed with great-grandsons Breton and Shawn Shea. Weldie was a beloved brother to Louie (Geri), Darrell (Ruth), Linda Bailey (Gordie Simms), Beverly (Rick) Brown. Also in-laws, Hilda (Wayne) MacDonald, Yvonne (Robert) Young, Calvin (Darlene) Blunden, Reg (Diane) Blunden, Isabel Yates, Linda Hodder and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his in-laws, Horace and Minnie Blunden, sister and brother- in- law, Jackie and John Brann, brother and sister- in- law, Francie and Barbara Yates, brothers- in- law, Ronald Bailey and Lloyd Blunden. Visitation will be held Sunday, February 24th from 2-4 and 6-9 at TJ Tracey Funeral Home, 370 Reserve Street, Glace Bay, NS (902-849-4199). Funeral mass will be celebrated 11a.m., on Monday Feb 25th at Holy Cross Parish with Father Norman MacPhee . Burial at a later date.
