It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Wayne Dennis Pickrem, age 79, of Waverley, Nova Scotia, who passed away peacefully on August 14, 2026, in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Victoria General Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Wayne was the beloved son of the late, Gerald and Margaret Pickrem.

Wayne was a familiar and friendly face throughout the Waverley community. For many years, he worked alongside his family at the Pickrem Shell Station where he built lasting friendships and was known for his strong work ethic and genuine kindness. Following his time there, Wayne dedicated 38 years as a school bus driver, serving generations of families throughout the community. Either at the garage or on the bus, many will fondly remember hearing him call, with a smile on his face, “Happy Motoring!”

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Wayne’s love of athletics began during his school years, when he found his love of sports as a basketball player and developed a passion for competition and teamwork that stayed with him throughout his life. He continued to enjoy sports for many years, playing baseball with local teams and later lacing up his skates for the Waverley Gold Diggers. Whether as a player, fan, or supporter, Wayne cherished being part of the local sports community and valued the many friendships he made along the way.

Wayne also had a deep passion for stock car racing. He spent countless hours both on and off the track, racing and supporting the sport alongside his father and brothers.

Above all, Wayne was devoted to his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Viola; daughter, Shelly (Kevan); son, Jeff (Jane); brother, Donnie (Donna); sister, Sheila; and his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Kiana (Ryan), Kenzie (Logan), Kamryn (Carter), Riley, Nathan, Dylan, Lucas, Ellody, Gianna, Mikayla (Brent), Taylor, and Madelyn.

He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Gerald, Kenny, and Ralph.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the VG Hospital Palliative Care Unit for their compassionate care, kindness, and support.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, September 7, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Waverley Legion, 2234 Rocky Lake Drive, Waverley, Nova Scotia. Family and friends are invited to gather to share memories and stories and celebrate Wayne’s life.
