Robert Edward “Robbie” Hodder

With deep sadness, the family of Robert Edward “Robbie” Hodder announce his passing on August 20, 2026, at the age of 89. Born in Glace Bay on March 24, 1937, Robbie was the son of Walter and Gena (Balahura) Hodder. A dedicated family man, he was known for his strong work ethic.

Robbie spent many years in Cape Breton’s coal-mining industry, serving in a variety of roles. He spoke fondly of the camaraderie he shared with his fellow miners.

He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy “Dot” Hodder “. Besides his parents and wife, Dorothy, he was predeceased by his younger sister, Anita Pepetone.

Robbie will be deeply missed by his children, Cheryl; Michelle (Dominic Docherty); Joy (Brent Boyd); and Bob (Rosslyn MacEachern) and his four cherished grandchildren: Ellen (Brenton Ives), Allison (Shane Hoar), Nolan, and Breagha, his great grandson Casper Ives, his sister Norma and several nephews and nieces.

For the last thirty (30) years, Robbie shared a loving relationship with Shirley Budden. He was warmly welcomed into her family and treasured the many moments they shared.

Robbie will also be fondly remembered by Shirley’s children, Charlene Pynn (Keith), Brian Budden (Karen), and Kenneth Budden (Karen), along with her six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Known for his sharp wit, Robbie had a gift for making people laugh and feel at ease. He was also an avid coin collector and enjoyed playing golf, skating, and cheering on the Toronto Blue Jays and the Montreal Canadiens.

The family thanks the medical staff at the CCU and ICU at Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the kind, attentive care they provided to Robbie.

A celebration of Robbie’s life will be held in Glace Bay at a later date.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, Glace Bay.
