After Barb and Keith returned to Cape Breton in 1972, we shared many fun-filled times with them. We have fond memories of noisy bridge games, supper dances, camping trips at Black Point, house parties, Murder Mystery games, New Years celebrations…. all accompanied by Barb’s exhilarating laughter. Keith, Jennifer, Brad, and Krista please accept our heartfelt condolences. You will miss her love, encouragement, and constant optimism. Barb was a wonderful friend. I drove her to choir most weeks and we shared lots of stories and laughs on our way to and from. I loved her positive outlook on life. Over the years I got to know about all her children and grandchildren from her weekly reports of your successes and challenges. She was so proud of you all, She was a great lady who I feel privileged to have known and loved. Keith and family please accept my condolences on your loss of a loving wife, mother and Nanny.

Every now and then you meet someone who is truly unique, kind, welcoming and lives life to the fullest. They light up the room when they enter and make everyone feel important and valued. Dear Mr. MacLeod and Family, I am so sorry to hear of Mrs. MacLeod’s passing. You were both such treasured friends of my parents Greta Anne and Linden Thurber. I have fond memories of many get togethers in Atikokan, the big green house in Sydney and also at their apartment in Halifax. Condolences to the extended MacLeod family. I was fortunate enough to spend lots of time with Mr. and Mrs. MacLeod in my growing up years. They were always kind and patient, and the fact that they didn't try to kill us all when we were teenagers is a testament to their generosity of spirit. I was immediately struck by Barb’s warmth the first time I met her as an “Upper Canadian” studying so far from home at Mt A. Barb: always welcoming and genuinely interested in how you were doing and the latest going-ons. Truly caring and invested. A beautiful soul who lives on in Jen, Brad, Krista and their children. After graduating from Mt A and marrying, my husband and I travelled east on our honeymoon, where a stop on the Mira was encouraged. We were shrouded in Barb’s and Keith’s hospitality — and a night out of music. Simply grand. There is a special place in my heart for both Barb and Keith as their kindness is a testament to the power of “good” in this world. As I garden, I will have a special smile and warmth in my heart each time I see a Monarch descend upon my echinacea or cosmos. It will be my time to welcome Barb and show the same hospitality in turn. Hugs to Keith and the entire family at this difficult time. To the MacLeod family, I first met Barb in the late 1970’s in Sydney. We would run into one another from time to time and have a lovely chat and get caught up. Her face always lit up whenever she talked about her family. I moved away for several years so it was some time before I saw her again and I was delighted to see her one day at the grocery store and learned we lived in the same neighbourhood. We picked up right where we left off. It was only a few weeks ago that we met for what would be the last time. I was shocked and so sad to read about her passing. I am sending my sincere sympathy to Barb’s family for your great loss. She was an incredible lady and she will be missed. Rest well, Barb.

Dear Keith and Family we were very sorry to learn of Barb's passing - our hearts ache for all of you. Barb and I became steadfast friends in grade 1. Altho, as young adults, our lives took different paths, we reunited again in retirement with wonderful memories of summers in CB. Barb was one of a kind - warm, independent and always upbeat. I have only known Barbara for a short while. I had the pleasure of sitting beside her in choir and in the Cantata. I loved her fun and colourful sensible shoes. Whenever I wear my silver glitter sneakers I always think of her youthful outlook on life. I will miss her.

Dear Keith and family : I was saddened to see Barbras photo and obituary in the CB Post today. You Keith and Barbara were always so well thought of in our home as my mom and dad Keith and Catherine Ervin though so much of you both. Barbara was so kind to my dad when she assisted him with selling his CB Weather Reports. He was thrilled she encouraged him and many many others throughout CB to be proud of their skills. I am so very sorry to hear about Barb’s passing. Yes she was one of a kind! Extremely positive, kind, thoughtful, smart and outgoing. We met in junior high - our piano teacher connected us to play the piano together. Been friends ever since- including Keith - a great friend as well!! Humor was always present too! There will never be another woman like Mrs. MacLeod. The grace, energy, and competence of Mary Poppins, this formidable woman was my neighbourhood mom, one of my mother’s first friends in Sydney, and, along with Keith, have been treasured friends of my parents for 54 years. Mr. MacLeod, Jen and family, Brad and family, and my oldest friend, Krista and family, I didn’t think this day would ever come and it’s difficult to imagine a world without your mom. Offering many heartfelt condolences to all the MacLeod family members... I of course remember Barb from the many bridge club nights and other social gatherings. I remember from a young age looking forward to seeing Barb at Island Crafts on Charlotte Street when my mom had an errand bringing us nearby. I remember her at the summer gatherings near Pictou. Through all of these environments, I remember and can still see and hear her effusive smile and laughter, and how she could make a person feel welcomed and comfortable. Oh, and Barb... Sorry that I was the one who stepped on and tracked in some of the neighbour's doggie doo-doo on my shoe shoe once when I was hanging out with Brad, Eric, and Chris... Prayers and thoughts to Jennifer, Brad, Krista and all the family I know you'll miss her dearly! I'm glad your mom was a part of my life. God bless!

Barb was always so welcoming . Her invited forces always included one of her home baked treats which were always delicious. When Krista married my brother Rorri, Barb welcomed our whole family with hugs and humour. She will be missed.
