Bernard "Bernie" MacKinnon Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, Bernie MacKinnon, who died on Thursday, July 16th, 2026.

Bernie was the devoted husband of the late Simone Marie (Aucoin) MacKinnon, with whom he shared 54 years of marriage. Together, Bernie and Simone built a life rooted in family, creativity, community, and their deep love for Cape Breton.

A dedicated educator, Bernie spent 35 years as a teacher, shaping the lives of countless students through his humour, patience, and care. His influence extended far beyond the classroom, and many will remember him not only as a teacher, but as a mentor who loved to have a good laugh.

Bernie was also a central figure in the cultural life of Cape Breton. He was a co-founder of both Cape Breton Folk and the Bayside Players, helping to create spaces where music, theatre, and local talent could thrive. His love of music was a constant throughout his life, and he found great joy in the songs, stories, and traditions that brought people together. For many years, he directed both plays and concerts at the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay, leaving a lasting mark on the community. Through his creativity, leadership, and commitment to the arts, Bernie brought people together and helped preserve and celebrate the spirit of Cape Breton culture.

Bernie leaves behind his daughter, Jenna MacKinnon (Jason Ross); his son, Michael MacKinnon (Donna Yu); and his two cherished grandsons, Ewen and Nolan.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Simone, whose memory remained close to his heart.

Bernie will be remembered with love, pride, and immense gratitude by his family, friends, former students, colleagues, performers, musicians, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched, the students he inspired, the performances he brought to life, and the family he loved so dearly.

In accordance with Bernie’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal ceremony will be held.
