Keith Gregory MacMillan Obituary

Keith Mac Millan , 77, of Westmount, passed away on July 8, 2026, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and a loyal friend and neighbor.

Keith was born and raised in Inverness NS, a community he dearly loved and stayed connected to throughout his life. He is predeceased by parents, Glennie (MacDonald) and Lauchlin MacMillan, and his in-laws Mary and Jack MacDonald. Keith graduated from Inverness Consolidated High School, Saint Francis Xavier University, and the Maritime School of Social Work.

Keith enjoyed 37 years as a social worker with the former Nova Scotia Department of Community Services. Retirement did not slow him down, and he found new enjoyment and friendships working with SystemCare Sydney and Cabot Links Golf Course in Inverness.

Keith is survived by his wife of 52 years, Agnes “Aggie” (MacDonald); daughters, Sonya (husband Grant Caswell) of Calgary, and Erin (husband Michael Small) of Toronto; step-grandchildren, Riley and Maggie Caswell; and the joys of his life, his grandchildren, Lloyd and Agnes Small.

Keith was involved in the community as a minor hockey coach, boy scout leader, and Red Cross volunteer. He served on the board of the Inverness Cottage Workshop (now Mill Road Enterprises), and played a major role in their fundraiser, the legendary 2015 Inverness Chase the Ace.

Keith was always on the move. He was a hockey player, marathon runner, early-morning walker, and avid golfer. He was a longtime member of Le Portage Golf Club, Cheticamp. For over thirty years, Keith and his family spent their summers at MacLeod’s Campsite in Dunvegan. He was a dedicated follower of the local harness racing scene and, in recent years, delighted his grandchildren by taking them to meet the horses at Inverness Raceway.

Keith was devoted to his family. He was a loyal friend to many, and he cared deeply for those in need. He shared his quick wit and sense of humour with everyone, including his early morning Tim Hortons buddies and the “Grumpy Old Men” Friday-morning breakfast group.

Cremation has taken place under the care of TJ Tracey Funeral Home, 6 Churchill Drive Sydney NS. A celebration of life will take place there, on August 6 at 2pm, with Reverend Peter MacDonald officiating. A reception will follow.

Keith’s family would like to thank Dr. R. Hodson, the Cape Breton Cancer Center, the Victoria General Hospital, and the VON, for their support over the past year.

Memorials can be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre, or a charity of choice.
