Surrounded by the love of family, Ann passed away peacefully in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in the early hours of July 7, 2026, at the age of 85. She faced the end of her life with the same dignity, courage, compassion, humour, and grace that defined the way she lived.

Ann is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, J. Barrie Reed; her beloved children, Darlene Reed-Yamauchi (Takeshi Yamauchi) of Japan, Yevette Reed (Matthew Stuckless) of Australia, and John Barrie Reed of Ontario; her cherished grandchildren, Liam (Emily Rana), Charlie, and Hugh Stuckless of Australia; her brothers, Ralph MacDonnell and Duncan (Nancy) MacDonnell; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends across Canada and around the world.

Ann was predeceased by her parents, Mabel (MacRae) and John Alexander MacDonnell; her sisters, Elsie (Hughie), Isabel (Louie), Kaye (Donald), and Ethel (Paul); her brothers, James (Winnie), John, Edward (Mabel), and Dan; and her infant sisters, Elizabeth and Mary.

Born in Grand Anse, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Ann carried with her throughout her life a strong sense of community, generosity, and resilience. Always humble and gracious, she believed deeply in service before self.

Ann’s unwavering commitment to her community was reflected in the many organizations, committees, and causes she innovated, supported and led throughout her life, most recently the Mission to Seafarers in Halifax, where she volunteered for decades. She welcomed seafarers from around the world with warmth, friendship, and genuine Maritime hospitality, offering comfort to those far from home and helping to make Halifax a welcoming port for countless visitors in the same way that she opened her home.

Ann's generosity extended far beyond her volunteer work. She and Barrie shared a home that was always open to others. Family, friends, neighbours, relatives, and often complete strangers found a warm welcome, a home-cooked meal, a listening ear, and a place to stay for as long as they needed.

Ann embraced life with curiosity, enthusiasm, and a wonderful sense of adventure. Together, she and Barrie shared a love of travel that took them around the world, creating treasured memories and embracing new places and cultures along the way. Nothing, however, brought her greater joy than spending time with her children and grandchildren. An avid reader, Ann believed that good books were meant to be shared. Books were constantly making their way into and out of her home, exchanged among neighbours, friends, and family, with Ann always ready to recommend the next great read.

Ann had an extraordinary ability to keep family connected. She always had her finger on the pulse of what was happening in the her large extended family, and if anyone wanted to know the latest news, all they had to do was call Ann. She delighted in searching for hidden treasures at yard sales and flea markets, enjoyed many spirited games of bingo, even continuing to play from home as her health declined. Whether welcoming guests into her home or keeping in touch with loved ones across the globe, Ann had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel valued, cared for, and connected.

A Celebration of Ann's Life will be held for family and friends at the Mission to Seafarers, 844 Marginal Road, Halifax, on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at 10:30 a.m.
