Frances "Elaine" Churney Obituary

Frances “Elaine” Churney

Reserve Mines, N.S.

On Saturday, July 4, 2026, nanny went to watch a play in Baddeck, and out for supper with a friend. And that evening, nanny passed away at her house, in her favourite room, the kitchen!

We, her family, are heartbroken and even though she was 88 years of age, to us, she was supposed to live forever. Active, funny, wise, the best person to give advice, nanny always had the best perspective on everything. She was non-judgemental, unless you were wearing something she didn’t like. If you were wearing something she liked she took it right off your back.

Nanny’s knee was the best for rocking, and she rocked us well into our teens. She made the best bread, loved her wine, shopping was her favorite sport, and we all excelled at it because of her. A kind and humble woman who never wanted anything for herself, and nor did she want anything in death, and we will honour her wishes of no visitation or service, or face being haunted. Our family found a little loophole that nanny did not even take into consideration and because we love her so much, we welcome family and friends to drop in to her home on 8 Wilson Court, Reserve Mines on Monday, July 13, 2026, from 1-4 p.m. Come have a drink, share stories, tears, and laughter, and celebrate the woman whom we will have to learn to live without.

She will be forever loved and missed beyond words by all her family; Fran (Greg) Martin, Michael and Lisa McMullin, Camille McMullin, Chris Jenkins, Glen Churney; a brother Lorne (Linda) Campbell; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

To honour Nan's memory, donations may be made to the SPCA or Transition House; this would make her truly happy.

Nanny, rest easy, we will continue to make you proud. We will make sure not one of your favorite stores go out of business because we will continue to shop knowing you will always be with us. While we know that you were greeted by Charlie, your parents, siblings and friends, we also know there was a very special person waiting for you, and we hope you are sitting on a cloud with a glass of Moscato, rocking Christopher on your knee and watching over us. We will love and miss you forever.

Cremation has taken place under the care and compassion of T.J. Tracey Funeral Home, Glace Bay.
