Richard Morenz Howie, 87

Glace Bay, N.S.

It is with great sadness that our family announce the passing of Morenz Howie, on July 3, 2026, at the age of 87, in the Glace Bay General Hospital. Born in 1939, he was the son of the late Tom and Agnes Howie, of Donkin, N.S.

Morenz started his career with Lynk Electric, followed by teaching Electrical Construction for 27 years at the Cape Breton Regional Vocational School. He was active in the labour movement and was a past president of IBEW Local 1852.

Dad enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and hunting, as well as summers on the Mira with his family. He enjoyed driving every back road in Cape Breton, always wanting to see what was around the next turn.

Morenz is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lorraine (Gallant); five children: Wesley (Linda), Debbie (Francis), Keith (Cheryl), Kent (Lora), and Scott (Jen); eight grandchildren: Courtney and Stacey Boone, Robert, Emma, Grace, Ethan, Sarah, Maeve and a special fondness to Keir Davy; six great-grandchildren: Kai, Dex, Callie, Carter, Emerson, and William. Morenz is also survived by one sister Doreen Howie.

Along with his parents, Morenz was predeceased by a brother Wesley in infancy.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place under the care and compassion of T.J. Tracey Funeral Home, Glace Bay. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Dad enjoyed a long life, well lived. The family would appreciate that in his memory people enjoy their favorite beverage and do an act of kindness for someone else. Life moves too quickly.
