It is with profound sadness that our family announces the passing of Robert (Bob) Joseph Kacevychius on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at the age of 64 years. Bob passed away peacefully at AgeCare Skyepointe Hospice Continuing Care in Calgary, Alberta, following a very brief illness. His loss leaves our hearts broken.

Born in Sydney, NS, on January 5, 1961, Bob was the son of the late Joseph Robert and Marie Ann (MacNeil) Kacevychius. Like many proud Cape Bretoners, Bob left home at the young age of 18, seeking employment in Alberta. After working for the City of Edmonton for a few years, he moved to Calgary, where he dedicated over 40 years of service to the City of Calgary Water Services and was known as "Kash" by his work family.

Bob's passing comes far sooner than any of us ever expected. He had so many plans, including his highly anticipated retirement in February 2026 and his dream of moving back home to Nova Scotia. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Growing up in the Northend of Sydney, NS, Bob was grateful for his upbringing and the many friendships he made. His visits back home, always included Napoli pizza, a donair, Horyl’s kielbasa, homemade molasses cookies and most importantly visiting with family and friends. Bob always enjoyed watching sports, especially his Chicago Blackhawks! He enjoyed Blues music and attended so many festivals and concerts.

Bob is survived by his sons Kyle (Sara), Cochrane AB and Reilley, St. Andrews, NB. His grandchildren Brynlee and Carson, Cochrane AB who will miss their “GiGi” so much. Bob is also survived by his brother Allan (Wendy) Kacevychius, Edmonton AB, and sisters Joanne (Greg) McNutt, Truro, NS and Marlene (Sandy) Urquhart, Sydney, NS; nephews and niece Evan Kacevychius, Conor Kacevychius and Alia (Brent) Kacevychius of Edmonton. He is also survived by his uncle Jed (Valerie) Ball, Aunt Anne Ball of Balls Creek, Uncle Al Law, New Glasgow NS and many cousins.

Bob had so many special friends that are too numerous to mention, but our family wants to recognize Barb (Justin) Bichel who was a constant support to Bob and our family.

Besides his parents, Bob was predeceased by his brother Wayne, maternal grandparents Allan H. and Catherine MacNeil, paternal grandparents Joseph R. Kacevychius and Bertha (Carey) (Kacevychius) Ball and Keith Ball, Godparents Clarence and Sheila (MacNeil) Chiasson, and many aunts and uncles.

Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to Bob’s lifelong friends, to “The East Coasters” who made Alberta their home, and his coworkers who so admired and loved Bob. The constant flow of visits this past month truly showed how deeply he connected with everyone. For 40 years, they became the family he chose in Calgary, and their unwavering support after his diagnosis meant the world to us and to Bob. We will forever hold onto the many stories shared, which perfectly captured his defining qualities: his kindness, his caring nature, his remarkable skill and his steady calmness.

Thank you for celebrating Bob’s life with us during every single visit. Thank you to the amazing staff at AgeCare Skypointe and the many other health professionals who played a role in his care plan and provided exceptional care to Bob. You are very special people.

Bob bravely faced his struggles with alcohol, finding a new path through a treatment program. He was a champion of sobriety and took immense pride in his 12 years of continuous sobriety. In Bob's memory, we hope that anyone currently struggling with addiction finds the courage to reach out for help and support. One of Bob's greatest gifts was the gift of life to so many when he had reached his 100 Blood donation with Canadian Blood Services in 2024. Also, in his memory, we would ask that you take a moment and register with Canadian Blood Services and give the gift of Life.

Under the direction of Foster's Garden Chapel Funeral Home & Crematorium, Calgary, Alberta, cremation has taken place and as per Bob's wishes, his remains will travel back to Nova Scotia with his sister Joanne.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 4, 2 pm, at T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 6 Churchill Drive, Sydney, NS. 539-7175. Interment will take place on Monday, July 6, 10 am at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks, NS, Fr. Bill Burke officiating.
