Kevin Aloysius O'Neill

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Kevin Aloysius O'Neill, who passed away peacefully on May 31, 2026, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, at the age of 75.

Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Kevin was the beloved son of the late Mary and James O'Neill. He was immensely proud of his Cape Breton roots and carried them with him throughout his life. Kevin had a deep love for family, faith, friendship, and community.

Kevin is survived by his loving brothers, Bernie O'Neill (Dorothy) and Danny O'Neill; his brother-in-law, Ron Cote; and his sister-in-law, Janice O'Neill; many nieces and nephews with whom he had a very special bond. He was predeceased by his brothers, Gerard and Jerome O'Neill; his sisters, Delores Holtman and Colleen Cote; his sister-in-law, Margie O'Neill; and his brother-in-law, Piet Holtman.

Kevin began his post-secondary studies at St. Francis Xavier University, where he proudly earned and wore his cherished X-ring. He later attended Carleton University in Ottawa, studying theology and discerning a vocation to the priesthood. Ultimately, his calling to teach proved stronger, and he settled in Toronto, where he devoted his life to elementary education.

As an educator, Kevin taught students of all ages and shared his talents in music, religious education, and outdoor education. He often joked that he was "a jack of all trades, master of none."

His love of travel was legendary among family and friends. Whether traveling with family to Punta Cana, Disney World, Jamaica, or making frequent trips throughout Cape Breton, Halifax, Ottawa, and beyond, Kevin was often the first to book the ticket and the last to stop planning the next adventure.

One of Kevin's most treasured experiences was a pilgrimage to the Holy Land with his dear friend Father Michael, followed by several cruises together. He often spoke of the joy and spiritual fulfillment that journey brought him and held that friendship close to his heart.

Faith was a cornerstone of Kevin's life. He lived each day with gratitude and a deep devotion to his Catholic faith. He gave generously of his time and talents to his church community, particularly at St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Toronto, where he was actively involved in sacramental preparation programs for countless young people and their families. He took great pride in this ministry.

Kevin will be remembered as a loving son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, friend, teacher, mentor, and man of faith. He touched the lives of countless people through his kindness, generosity, humor, and unwavering support. He loved to laugh, loved to talk, and loved to stay connected with the people who mattered most to him.

Though words cannot fully express what Kevin meant to all who knew him, his legacy lives on in the many lives he touched. We take comfort in knowing that we have one more special person watching over us from above.

We will miss him deeply. May he rest in peace.

Cremation has taken place. A graveside service to be held on Friday July 17, 2026, at St John’s Cemetery, Glace Bay, N.S., beginning at 10 a.m., with Fr. Norman MacPhee presiding.
