It is with great love, gratitude and sorrow that we the family of Howard “Huck” Buckland,73,

announce his passing on June 24, 2026 after a brave battle with cancer.

Huck was born, raised and lived in Mira Road and was extremely proud of his roots. He was predeceased by his parents, Gerald “Jack” and Rose (Howard) Buckland and his in-laws Shea and Eileen (McDonald) McInnis.

Huck’s greatest love was his family. He is survived by his wife Bea (McInnis), his daughter Justine Currie, son-in-law Shaun Currie and his shining star, his grandson, Kase Currie. His brothers Bill (Donna) and Brad (Shari) share many precious memories and common interests with Huck as do his nieces and nephews.

As an avid sportsman, Huck enjoyed many years of fly-fishing on the Bras d’Or, Middle River and Margaree. He had an appreciation for all sports, especially hockey and football and was a loyal Red Wings and Patriots fan. His favorite pastime was watching any sporting event with his daughter Justine and his annual NFL trips to several US cities following his beloved Patriots. With his love of traveling a priority in his life, trips to the Caribbean, Florida and California played second fiddle to exploring Cape Breton Island. Thanks to 32+ years with NS Power/Emera, there haven’t been too many places he hasn’t been on the Island.

Huck was an outdoor enthusiast and somewhat of an environmentalist. Next to blues music, the sound of the common loon over the house in the morning was his favorite sound. He loved his backyard birds especially, hummingbirds, chickadees, woodpeckers and his “pet” crows. Tending his flower gardens, washing his vehicles and doing yardwork were ways that Huck expressed the pride he had in his property.

Huck’s family would like to thank everyone that was involved in his care during his illness, especially Dr. Liam Orrell, Dr. Heather Poushay and the doctors and nurses of An Cala Palliative Care and Cape Breton Hospice who treated Huck with care, compassion and friendship.

Keeping with Huck’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a funeral mass will celebrate his life at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish on Tuesday, June 30th at 11 am followed by a reception at T.J.Tracey Funeral Home on Kings Road in Sydney.
