SLADE, Ora Leona - age 91, of Upper Ohio, Shelburne County passed peacefully on Monday, June 22nd, 2026 at Ivany Place in Bedford, NS with her sons and daughter in law by her side. Pre-deceased by her husband Ron, Ora will be deeply missed by her sons, Chris and Peter; daughter in law, Debbie (Peter); grandsons, Logan and Luke, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ora was the daughter of Dora and Manus Bower, and was the last of a family of eight sons and four daughters born on the Upper Ohio family farm.

In grade 5 Ora began attending school in Halifax and was a sighted student at the School for the Blind, graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School and Halifax Vocational.

Ora met her husband through curling at the Mayflower Curling Club and they were married on September 2nd 1961. Ron's work took them to Ottawa and Montreal during the 1960s before they returned to Halifax in 1972.

In addition to being a loving mother, her secretarial career included the Department of Welfare, HM Dockyard for Sup-ply and Defense Research (where she also played in an organized woman's hockey league) and more than 18 years with Sangamo Canada until her retirement.

She enjoyed staying busy and spent time volunteering with CGIT, Brownies, and St John United Church. Grandchil-dren Lara, Logan and Luke were a highlight of her life and she was always jumped at a chance to babysit or just spend time playing with them as they grew up.

Ora resided at Ivany Place for 16 years. First in Mayflower, and later in Bluenose Cove. And during that time was a member of the residents council, including sitting as its chairman.

The care and compassion provided by the staff of Ivany Place their residents is remarkable and appreciated. Ora's time there was better because of it.

Cremation will take place, with plans for a graveside gathering by family at a later date.
