A Tribute to our Dad - Arthur Fabian Curran

There are some people who remain in our hearts forever. Our Dad, Fabian, was one of those people. Though his life journey came to a close on June 18, 2026, the strength, wisdom, and love he shared continue to shape our lives and will remain with us always.

Born and raised in the communities of Table Head and McCaskill Brook, Nova Scotia, Dad was the son of Mary Harriette (Haddie) and James Henry Curran, both of whom predeceased him. Dad was a resilient man of steel. The son of a coal miner, and a coal miner himself, he carried the values of hard work, determination, and perseverance throughout his life. He met life’s obstacles with courage, ingenuity, and an unwavering belief, deep inside, that there was always a solution if you were willing to work for it.

He was a proud big brother and member of the Hub Athletic Club. In his younger years Dad loved boxing and rowing, building a foundation of physical strength that stayed with him throughout his life. An avid hunter, outdoorsman and sometimes gardener, he found great joy in nature. He also enjoyed playing baseball, dancing, skating and swimming. He graciously shared his love of nature with us through walks in nature, skating, swimming and camping adventures.

Dad could discuss almost any topic from local events to world affairs with remarkable insight. Most of all, he was a good listener whose door was always open for a cup of tea and a chat. Like his dad, he was a gifted carpenter and a true jack-of-all-trades. There seemed to be nothing he couldn’t build, repair, create, or improve. Dad approached every task with curiosity, skill and a few “words of frustration” now and again. He embraced life in his own way and made the best of what he was given. Music was woven into the rhythm of his life and his home was often filled with the sounds of the 1950s, especially Elvis Presley. He loved to play guitar and possessed a beautiful singing voice, that those who heard it never forgot. He could yodel, whistle virtually any tune, and was always happiest when music filled his home. He enjoyed dressing well, and experimenting in the kitchen with jams, preserves and his own style of cooking. Many will fondly remember his famous “hot sauce”, a recipe passed down from his father and lovingly shared with us and any interested grandchild.

Dad also found joy in life’s simple pleasures. Every day began with a ritual of a cup of tea made with Carnation cream and a hearty breakfast of eggs, bacon, and toast with jam. Most importantly, Dad loved his family. Dad often expressed that one of his greatest joys was watching his daughters grow into strong, accomplished women. He celebrated our successes quietly knowing wholeheartedly, that the values he lived by, hard work, resilience, honesty and helping whenever you can would continue through us and future generations.

Dad leaves behind the three of us, his daughters, Gail Woodford (Raymond), Star Curran (John Routledge) and Colette Curran (Ed McNamara); his former wife and our mother, Rita (Legnaro) Piraine; his grandchildren, Steven, Andrea, Matt Woodford and Trysten Curran-Routledge; his sisters, Barbara Ann and Noreen (Carol) and his longtime friend, Lisa Barrett and several nieces and nephews.

Dad was predeceased by his parents, Harriett (Haddie) and James (Jimmy), and by his brothers, Jim (Junior), Francis (PeeWee/Frank), Lavon, Wayne, Kevin, Barry and his sister Lorraine.

Special thanks to all who helped our Dad especially Dr. Travis Guy who was Dad’s long time family doctor and favorite sparring partner. Dad said many times how good of a doctor he was to him.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation. A private family service has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Firefighters Burn Treatment Society, Nova Scotia Cancer Society, the SPCA or a charity of one’s choice.

We were blessed to call him Dad. His strength carries us, his sacrifices shaped us, and his love will remain our foundation for the rest of our lives.
