Brian Claver Slaney Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian Claver Slaney on May 31, 2026, at the age of 72.

Brian gave countless hours to the Sydney River and Area Kinsmen, the Sunrise Rotary Club, and other community organizations. He was recognized in both circles—achieving the post of Deputy Governor in Kinsmen and named Rotarian of the Year—but titles were never really the point for him. Brian jumped feet first into everything and gave it his all, usually at a pace that suggested sitting still was not one of his core skills.

In the mid-1990s, he even took a run at politics, helping bring the NDP back from the ashes and missing a seat in Cape Breton West by only about 500 votes. True to form, he gave it a couple more shots, because once Brian believed in something, he was all in. He cared deeply about his community and was always ready to organize, fundraise, mentor, or simply lend a hand wherever it was needed. He was also passionate about rescuing animals, and we always seemed to have a cat or dog he had brought home to join the family. On one occasion, he arrived with a dripping stray rescued from the Lingan Power Generating Station and announced it like he was introducing a distinguished new houseguest, rather than explaining why there was now a wet cat in the kitchen.

His leadership was never really about titles or recognition. It showed up in the respect people had for him and in the gratitude of those whose lives he touched. He believed in working together, building real connections, and leaving things better than he found them. By example, he inspired others to get involved and do their part for the community.

Of all the roles he had in life, the one he cherished most was being a father to his beloved daughter, Stephanie. She was the light of his life, and he was so proud of the person she became. Their bond was unbreakable, built on love, loyalty, and likely at least a few long conversations where Brian had strong opinions and no shortage of advice. The many memories they made together will stay with Stephanie always.

Brian was also a devoted dog lover, and his four-legged companion, Hunter, brought him endless joy. He was a lifelong Boston Bruins fan, and as a goalie himself, he always had a soft spot for the underdog—something his dad taught him from an early age. He never missed a chance to root for his team, and whether they won or lost, he always had plenty to say about it. Those passions brought a lot of warmth, energy, and personality to his life.

Earlier in life, he shared many years of marriage, and while that chapter eventually came to a close, he remained grateful for the family and experiences that came from it.

He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie (Nick), his stepfather, Joe; and his siblings, Paul (Elaine), Cathy (Mike), Lawrence (Claire), Chris (Jacqueline), Brenda (Blair), Kim (Carmen), nieces and nephews Brendan, Deanna, Kristin, Matt, Meaghan, Nathan, Maggie, Emma, Graham as well as great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Camille Slaney Kennedy, and his father, Claver Slaney.

As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life filled with purpose, generosity, and heart. The community he cared for so deeply is stronger because of him, and his legacy lives on in the many people he helped and inspired. He left things better than he found them—which, for anyone keeping score, is a pretty remarkable way to go through life.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at TJ Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 6 Churchill Drive, Sydney, 902-539-7175, with a visitation at 1pm followed by a memorial service at 2pm. A reception will follow the service. For those unable to attend, livestreaming will be available and can be viewed by visiting the T.J. Tracey facebook page.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and the Cape Breton SPCA—causes that reflect his lifelong commitment to helping, as he would say, both humans and critters. He would likely agree that if you are going to be remembered, being associated with kindness and a soft spot for strays is not a bad legacy to leave behind.

Though he is gone, the kindness, generosity, and dedication he brought to the people and causes he loved will be felt for generations to come.
