Michael Myers MacDonald Obituary
Michael Myers MacDonald, 89
Glace Bay, N.S.
It is with deep love and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Michael Myers MacDonald, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the age of 89.
Born in 1937 in the coal mining town of Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Dad was the son of the late Howard MacDonald and Mary Currie. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was predeceased by a son Danny, his brothers Murdoch, Robert, Johnny, Kevin, and Elmer, and his sisters Josephine, Catherine, and Eileen.
Dad grew up in Bridgeport, where he formed lifelong friendships and developed a deep pride in his community. Those early years remained close to his heart throughout his life. He often spoke fondly of the "old days," sharing stories filled with laughter, mischief, and memories of adventures with friends who remained dear to him for a lifetime.
From a young age, Dad had a fascination with cars and a natural gift for mechanics. He loved bringing home old vehicles, proudly telling Mom how he planned to fix them up and make a little extra money for the family. There seemed to be no engine he couldn't repair. He could take one apart and put it back together again almost with his eyes closed. His ingenuity, determination, and strong work ethic were just some of the many ways he cared for those he loved.
Dad spent his working years in the coal mines, providing for his family with strength, dedication, and unwavering commitment. The values of hard work, perseverance, and responsibility guided him throughout his life.
A proud member of the Knights of Columbus for many years, Dad believed strongly in faith, family, and community. The values he embraced through his membership were reflected in the way he lived his life—always willing to lend a hand, support those in need, and put others before himself.
To know Dad was to know kindness in action. He was the kind of man who would never drive past someone stranded on the side of the road. Whether it was a flat tire, a dead battery, or a vehicle that simply wouldn't start, he was always willing to stop and help. His love of cars and machinery was only matched by his desire to help others.
Above all else, Dad was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He cherished his children deeply and was always ready to lend a helping hand. Whether it was fixing something around the house, completing a project, or simply being there when someone needed him, he gave generously of his time and talents without ever expecting anything in return.
His grandchildren were the light of his life, and there was rarely a time when he wasn't there for them. From school pickups and hockey games to concerts, graduations, and countless milestones, Dad showed up. He offered unconditional love, encouragement, and support, creating memories that will be treasured forever. His love extended equally to his 14 great-grandchildren, who brought him tremendous pride and joy.
Dad also had a deep love for the ocean and all it provided. One of our family's most cherished traditions was celebrating his birthday each year with a lobster feast. Family would gather together, often in the garage, to enjoy good food, laughter, and each other's company. Those gatherings reflected what Dad valued most: family, connection, and togetherness.
He shared many years of marriage with his beloved wife, Margie, who predeceased him in 2014. Like any couple, they experienced life's ups and downs, but their love, loyalty, and commitment to one another endured.
Dad will be remembered for his joyful spirit, infectious laugh, and remarkable ability to lift the spirits of those around him. When life became difficult, he always found a way to make people smile.
He also treasured a lifelong friendship with his dear friend Mickey Dan, a bond that endured through the decades and stood as a testament to his loyalty and character.
Dad leaves behind his loving children: Michael (Priscilla), Debbie (Albert), Josephine, Michelle (Rob), Marie (Kevin), Danette, and Dawn (Dean); his 16 cherished grandchildren, Francis, Jason, Matthew, Shaun, Justine, Christopher, Hilary, Jessica, Justin, Kailey, Erika, Jordan, Nathan, Brooke, Josh, and Bailey; and his 14 beloved great-grandchildren.
He also leaves to mourn his nephew, Troy MacDonald, who was more like a son than a nephew.
Dad's life was one of quiet generosity, unwavering strength, and unconditional love. His legacy lives on not only in the family he raised, but also in the countless lives he touched through his kindness, compassion, and willingness to help anyone in need.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to, Debbie our oldest sister whose love, devotion, and tireless care allowed Dad to remain in the comfort of his own home during his final years. Honouring his deepest wish, Debbie ensured he was surrounded by the familiarity, dignity, and love of home until the very end. Her selfless commitment and unwavering support were a gift not only to Dad, but to our entire family.
We would like to thank palliative care for their wonderful support during this difficult time. Also, we would like to send our heartfelt appreciation to Dr Jamie McLean, your support to Dad throughout the last few years will never be forgotten.
If you were fortunate enough to know Dad, chances are he helped you somewhere along the way.
He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
