John Harley Grimmer Obituary
John Harley Grimmer, 86, of Halifax passed away May 21, 2026, at the Halifax Infirmary. Born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick he was predeceased by both his parents John Herbert Grimmer and Ruth Evangelyn (Hayter) Grimmer; step-Father Austin Allen; and stepbrother, James Allen. He was an active member of the St. Lukes United Church, a HAM Radio Operator (VE1 MX), an avid stamp collector, owner/operator of Nova Philatelic for many years, and a Scouter (Akela) with Boy Scouts of Canada. Harley attended schools in Chamcook and St. Andrews NB. In the late 1950’s he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force under the University Reserve Training Program (URTP) for about two years and then went on to attend the University of New Brunswick (UNB) culminating in a master’s degree in electrical engineering. He was employed with Maritime Telephone and Telegraph (MT&T) and after a distinguished career, he retired after 30 years.
Survived by his wife Annie Wright (Toogood) Grimmer of 60 years; two sons, Allan Grimmer (Daughter In-law Amber Collins-Grimmer) and James (Jamie) Grimmer; sister, Caroline Grimmer; stepsister, Debbie (Allen) McClean (Jamie), and Bonnie Allen wife of the late (James Allen); three grandchildren, Lorelei, Bradely and Natalie (his special buddy) and several sister/brother in-laws, and many nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be held May 27, 2026, from 4PM to 6 PM in T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 71 McQuade Lake Crescent, Beechville, NS, B3S 1C4. Funeral service will be held May 28, 2026, at 11AM in St. Lukes United Church, 5374 St. Margarets Bay Rd. Rev. Heather Fraser officiating and assisted by Heather Star Williams. There will be a reception at St. Luke’s with interment to follow at Oakridge Memorial Gardens cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation, St Luke’s United Church of Canada, or Brigadoon Village.
