Stephen William Callahan Obituary

With great sadness, we say goodbye to our beloved Stephen, who passed away surrounded by his loving family after a brave battle with cancer.

Stephen leaves behind his devoted mother Deborah (Purcell) Callahan; his daughter, Theresa Jeffrey and grandson Treyden; his brother, Jeff (Lauren) and sister Jeanette (Michael); and was predeceased by his father, William Callahan; grandparents, Madeline (Doucette) and William Callahan and Hilda (LeFort) and Robert Purcell. Stephen will be missed by a large extended family of cousins, aunts and uncles.

Stephen was a really popular kid, with those big brown eyes and a wonderful sense of humour. He had lots of friends, dressed to impress and listened to the coolest music. Stephen loved sports and played baseball and hockey. Although his time as an athlete was cut short by injury, he was a lifelong fan of the Montreal Canadians, 49ers and the Toronto Blue Jays.

Stephen found a real passion in food and loved cooking for family and friends. He went to cooking school at NSCC, Leed St. in Halifax and managed the Bluenose Hotel and worked at the old Derby. He and his brother, Jeff, once made a delicious moose roast that the dog stole when Stephen insisted they let it rest. They also eventually figured out how to make some serious ribs in the smoker.

Stephen worked in construction and was great with his hands and happy to help with building projects. He travelled around the province and beyond to lend his skills.

His best friend and dog, Buddy, held a special place in Stephen’s heart and they were close companions. They are together again.

Please join friends and family for a celebration of Stephen’s life from 2 - 5 pm on Saturday, May 23rd, 2026 at MacDonald Memorial Legion Branch 156, 231 Greenhead Rd., Lakeside, NS
