Born and raised in Africville, Shirley carried her community with her throughout her life. Alongside her husband, Clarence George Brown—also born in Africville—they stood firm in their belief that the land and legacy of Africville belonged to their people. They remained dedicated to the vision of reclaiming that land for their children and future generations, a commitment rooted in pride, resilience, and justice.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Clarence George Brown; her son, Benefit Brown; and her grandson, Joey Sylvie Brown.

She is lovingly remembered by her children: sons, Alvin (Doll) Byers Brown (Dartmouth), Austin (Sammy) Brown (Halifax), Donald (Ann) Brown (Halifax), Steven (Laura) Brown (Timberlea), and Elston (Lorraine Gannon) Brown (Tangier, NS); and daughters Patsy Brown (Halifax), Christine Brown Carvery (Halifax), Carolyn Brown (Halifax), and Kim Brown (Halifax). She also leaves behind many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry her love, strength, and legacy forward.

Visitation will take place on Tuesday May 12, 2026 from 4pm-6pm in T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 71 McQuade Lake Crescent, Beechville, NS, B3S 1C4.

A celebration of Life Service will take place on Wednesday May 13, 2026 in New Horizons Baptist Church, 5457 Nora Bernard St, Halifax, NS, B3K 1B1 at 11am.
