Rose Marie Deveaux Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Rose, announce her peaceful passing. Born in 1952 in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Rose was the daughter of Joe and Ruby Deveaux and the eldest of ten children—a role she embraced with grace, responsibility, and unwavering love. From an early age, she set a path of determination and achievement that her siblings proudly followed.

Rose left home to pursue her passion for education, building a remarkable career as a chemistry teacher at Dartmouth High School, where she dedicated her entire professional life. She was deeply proud of her work and cherished the daily interactions with her students. Her commitment extended far beyond the classroom: she chaperoned school dances, coordinated graduation ceremonies, and served as staff advisor for athletic teams. Through these roles, she formed many lasting friendships, including a particularly special lifelong bond with her colleague Linda Lever, with whom she remained close throughout retirement.

Rose loved to travel. She delighted in visiting museums, exploring history, and discovering new corners of Nova Scotia. She found joy in simple journeys around the province. She was an avid reader and bridge player.

Family was at the heart of Rose’s world. As the eldest sibling, she was supportive, encouraging, and endlessly proud of the successes of her brothers and sisters. She adored her nieces and nephews, and her joy only grew with the arrival of great-nieces and great-nephews, whose stories and adventures she followed with enthusiasm and love.

Rose returned often to Cape Breton, where she felt most at home. She treasured time spent with family—barbecues, blueberry picking, and peaceful days at the beach. These moments were among her happiest.

Rose will be forever missed by her mother Ruby; brothers, Eric (Leslie), Allan, Steve (Gina), Kevin (Lorraine), and Joe (Audrey); sisters, Ann Seens (Chris), Anita MacDonald, Cathy, and Sally McNeil (Ian); her 14 nieces and nephews; and her 20 great-nieces and great-nephews.

She is predeceased by her father, Joe; and brother in law, Eddie MacDonald.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A family celebration of life will be held at a later date.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to all medical staff who cared for Rose throughout her illness. Special appreciation is given to Dr. Mallory and the team at the Nova Scotia Cancer Centre, as well as the extraordinary staff of 7.4 at the Halifax Infirmary, whose compassion and professionalism brought comfort during difficult days.

Rose’s life touched many, and her memory will remain a blessing to all who knew and loved her.
