Russell Zenophen O'Toole Obituary
It is with deep love and gratitude for a life well lived that the family of Russell Zenophen O’Toole announces his passing.
Russell is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Jennifer Richard (Brad), of Wolfville; his son, Sean, of Sydney, of whom he was deeply proud; and his cherished daughter, Jill of New Waterford, whom he cared for devotedly for 50 years. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Spencer and Carter Richard of Halifax, whose presence in his life brought him immeasurable joy. He is also survived by his sister, Pat Munroe (Don), of Sydney, his sister-in-law Linda Robert of Montreal, and many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews who will remember him fondly.
He was predeceased by his parents, Russell Sr. and Florence (Parago), his sister Bernadette (Donnie), and his brother Donald.
Russell lived his life with warmth, resilience, and a deep sense of care for others. A natural caregiver, he spent his life looking after those around him, always with generosity, compassion, and heart, right to the very end. As his niece Laurel reminded us, he often said that in life, you play the cards you are dealt, and he did so with grace, humour, and remarkable skill, both in life and at the card table, where he was truly in his element. He especially enjoyed games of tarabish and crib, bringing people together in laughter and friendly competition.
Russell began working with CN Rail at just 16 years old, an experience that shaped the foundation of his strong work ethic. He later attended St. Francis Xavier University, graduating in 1972 with a Bachelor of Business Administration, and proudly wore his X ring throughout his life. Following his degree, he returned to CN Rail, where he built a long and dedicated career before continuing his work with Marine Atlantic in North Sydney. He took great joy in the wonderful people he worked with over the years and often shared stories of memorable meals and adventures from his business travels. While he was deeply committed to his work, his family was always his top priority and the centre of his life.
Over the years, Russell pursued many interests, including curling, golfing, photography, and collecting coins and stamps. Above all, he found his greatest joy in camping. He travelled widely throughout Eastern Canada and the United States, happiest in Florida and White Mountains of New Hampshire, sharing stories around a campfire with those he loved.
He was also the heart of the cherished Sunday Night Supper Club, where, alongside his son, and for many years, his beloved cohost Jeanette prior to her illness and passing, he was the consummate host. Together, they welcomed family for evenings filled with home-cooked meals, desserts, and lively games of cards. These gatherings, shared with Pat, Don, Paulette, Willie, Claire, and Jerry, were a testament to his love of connection, hospitality, and tradition.
Family was at the centre of everything Russell did. His love was steady, enduring, and unconditional, and it will continue to guide and comfort those who knew him.
Russell’s favourite saying was, “Remember the good times,” and his family invites all who knew him to do just that, holding on to the memories, the laughter, and the love he shared so freely, so often creating those good times for everyone around him.
The family would also like to recognize Michelle Magis, whose kindness and care meant so much to Russell, Jeanette, and Jill. She helped look after their home, lifted their spirits, and everyone looked forward to seeing what fun joke or drawing she would leave on the chalkboard by the side door.
Thanks to Dr. Jonathan Hebb and the ICU team at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their compassionate care. Family graveside interment will take place April 25th, 2026, at 10am at Resurrection Cemetery with a Celebration of Life afterwards at T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 6 Churchill Drive, Sydney, NS, 902-539-7175, open for all.
In his memory, donations may be made to Hospice Cape Breton, Cape Breton Residential Society, contributions of food may be offered to Loaves and Fishes, or acts of kindness may be carried out in his honour, gestures that reflect the care and compassion he showed throughout his life.
