Delores "Nanny Lores" MacVicar Obituary
Delores MacVicar — “Nanny Lores”
With deep sadness and endless love, we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, and Nanny, Delores MacVicar, who passed away on March 4th, surrounded by her family. Delores was born on November 7, 1936, in Glace Bay to the late Clara and Victor Butts and was one of eight children.
In December 1956, she married Roderick “Roddie” MacVicar, the love of her life. Together, for nearly 70 years, they built a beautiful life grounded in devotion, resilience, and unwavering commitment. Their marriage was a true testament to enduring love.
To Roddie, she was “Lores,” a name that lovingly stuck, as all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren came to know her as Nanny Lores — their beautiful, loving grandmother, the glue that held the family together, and the place they all called home.
Delores was always the heart of the family — her home was the gathering place where family met, stories were shared around the table, and no one ever left without hearing the words, “I love you.” Everything Delores did was for her family, and in return, everything her family did was for her.
She loved her children deeply and absolutely adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Being a mother and grandmother was her greatest joy, and she took pride in making sure everyone felt cared for and welcomed whenever they walked through her door. Whether she was sitting you down for a hot meal, getting Roddie to make you a cup of tea (and toast), or sending you off with a new sweater, she always made sure you knew she was there for you.
Through her strength and the values she lived by, Delores helped shape generations of strong, kind, and loving people in her family. Her daughter Wanda provided exceptional love and care to both her mother and father after her retirement — a quiet devotion that reflected the very values Delores instilled in her family. She taught them that strength and kindness can go hand in hand, and that everyone deserves to be met with love and acceptance.
Although Delores was full of love and kindness, she was also a bit of a firecracker when it came to her family. If you hurt one of her babies, you could be sure Nanny Lores would have something to say about it.
She also had her own way of doing things. Delores loved her pop and would be appalled if anyone suggested she drink water instead. She lived life on her own terms — strong, determined, and entirely herself. Delores was built differently: one of the strongest and most incredible women you could ever meet, and we are all better for having had her in our lives.
Even now, as we gather to remember her, she is still doing what she always did best— bringing us all together.
Delores is survived by her husband, Roderick (Roddie) MacVicar, their children, Cathy (Shannon) Spencer, Roddie (Colleen) MacVicar, Wanda (Jamie) Lawrence, and Tammy MacVicar (who was lovingly raised by her Nan and Papa), grandchildren, Tiffany Andrews, Kevin Andrews, Helena Lawrence, Shana Lawrence, Evan Lawrence, Logan MacVicar, Shealeigh Mazzocca, Knoel Spencer, Stephanie Spencer and great grandchildren, Rhyan, Caelum, Emmah, Kenzie, Claire, Sidney, Gracie, Landon, Jayce, Paislee, Zoey, Giovanni, Dani, Vinny, Owen, Jacob, Violet and Emmie, Sophie, and Hunter, her brother Joe (Lanie) Butts, sister Carla (Ronnie) Smith and her loving extended family.
Besides her parents, Delores was predeceased by her daughter, Wendy, and Wendy’s husband Kevin; her brothers Billy, Victor, Earl, and Wayne; her sister Rita; and her cherished granddaughter Kathleen.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Family First Medical and the Glace Bay Hospital 3 East nurses and doctors for all the compassionate care and support.
As per her wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 9, 2026, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., with a Memorial Service to follow at 1 p.m., all taking place in T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay. 902-849-4199.
