Glace Bay, N.S.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Michelle Corinne Johnston, 48 yrs old of Glace Bay who died peacefully on the morning of February 24, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with a progressive neurological condition.
Michelle is lovingly remembered by her parents, Robert and Marilyn; her sister Rhonda (Gary); her brother Ryan (Anne); and her cherished nieces and nephews, Mara, Riley, Scott, James, Andrew, and Evelyn. She is also survived by a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and an outstanding group of cousins. She is predeceased by all her grandparents Robert and Babe Johnston, James and Annie McPhee, her Aunts Phyllis Letcher, Donna McPhee and Janice McPhee, her Great Aunt Enid Johnston as well as her beloved Uncles David Hanrahan and Sandy Johnston.
Michelle grew up on Norwood Street, surrounded by a close-knit circle of neighbourhood friends. She attended St. Anthony’s Elementary School, Morrison Junior High, and Glace Bay Senior High School. She went on to earn a degree in Human Kinetics from St. Francis Xavier University and a degree in Physiotherapy from Queen’s University. Her high school and university years were filled with friendship, laughter, and memories she treasured throughout her life. Michelle used this university learning to establish herself in Ottawa where she lived for many years and worked both in private practice and with the Federal Government.
Michelle loved travelling, live music, dancing, and the simple comfort of falling asleep during a good movie. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her deep love for her family, and her remarkable gift for friendship.
A heartfelt thank you to her best friend Steven Cote (wife Brooke and children Cole, Connor, and Caitlin) — she treasured being a part of your family. To her St. FX, Queen’s, and Ottawa friends, thank you for the adventures and memories she held so close. Thank you to her cousin Eric Letcher who helped give her the gift of life almost 20 years ago which allowed her to fully love all her time in Ottawa. We are also deeply grateful to her dear friends Amanda White, whose kindness was a constant light, and Melanie McIntyre, who never failed to make her smile. Thank you to her neighbour and close friend Lisa Eagles for the many drives, conversations, and time spent with Roxy.
The family extends sincere appreciation to the care she received from New Waterford Home Care and Victoria Haven Care Home. Your compassion, support and friendly presence is so appreciated. Thank you to the Palliative Care team for their kindness and accessibility when it mattered most.
Cremation has taken place under the care and compassion of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, Reserve Street in Glace Bay. A Celebration of Life will be held at T.J. Tracey’s at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to honour her memory with a simple act of kindness.
Michelle is now free from the body that failed her — able to dance again.
She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
