Brian Cox, beloved husband, son, brother and uncle passed away peacefully at the age of 65 in the Halifax Infirmary on Thursday night, February 12, 2026, at 9.30 p.m. Brian was a long-time resident of Halifax, having returned to the city he loved and was born in after spending his early adult years in Toronto.

The Greeks only asked one question about a man when he died- “Did he have passion?” Brian possessed considerable passion for life. He was passionate about his music, working out and staying fit, developing new recipes in the kitchen, about his pets, pursuing knowledge especially about history and politics and his passionate love for his family and his dear and brave wife Laurel. Brian was a fantastic self-taught musician and song writer and perhaps in a different time and with a couple of breaks might have become famous in the traditional ways that fame is accomplished. For those that had the great privilege of hearing him sing they would certainly agree.

As a cook, he had many signature dishes, but any lucky enough to taste his beef stroganoff would likely agree that they have never tasted any better anywhere.

Brian’s knowledge of both history and politics was extraordinary, and he was passionate about talking about these topics and passing on that knowledge. At his core, Brian was a kind, thoughtful, courageous, and generous human being who always tried to be a good man. Mission accomplished.

Brian’s passion extended to many things other than his music but perhaps his most admirable trait was his absolute commitment to always take the road less travelled. He was a man that was never afraid of following the non-traditional path or for challenging the status quo that most of us just accept as universal truths. It was, perhaps, his finest quality. He died the same way he lived his life, with courage and an unshakeable belief in his own path. He will be dearly missed.

Brian is survived by his wife Laurel, his brother David, and his nephew Cooper.
