It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Edward Leo Carvery of Africville, Nova Scotia, on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at the age of 79.
Born on October 5, 1946, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Edward was one of ten children born to the late Clarence and Daisy Carvery.
Edward leaves behind his beloved children, sons, Edward II (Boo-man)-Catherine; Randy; Wendell (Dinky); daughters, Denise, Jodi, Tereza-Derrek, Chantal, Tandra, and special daughters Tinesha and Tinika. He also leaves to cherish his memory his 27 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.
He was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Doretta (Snookie) and Evelyn (Evy) Thompson; his brothers, Raymond, Clarence (Dickie), and Victor Carvery; and his two siblings who passed at childbirth; his daughter, Zoey; and his granddaughter, Jada. He is survived by his sister, Priscilla Carvery; and his brother, Irvine Carvery, along with many extended family members and lifelong friends.
Edward’s early education began in the segregated school in Africville, the historic Black community on the shores of the Bedford Basin in Halifax. He later attended Mulgrave Park School in the North End of Halifax. Demonstrating determination and vision from a young age, Edward went on to become one of the first students accepted into the Transitional Year Program (TYP) at Dalhousie University. He later received further training in welding in Sydney, Nova Scotia, equipping himself with skills that would support him throughout his life.
Eddie spent the greater part of his adult life fighting to right the wrong of the destruction of his beloved community of Africville. His unwavering dedication to justice, accountability, and recognition made him a powerful and enduring voice for his community. His story became known throughout Canada, making him a respected community advocate, a symbol of resilience, and a household name.
As part of his five decades-long protest, which is the longest recorded in Canadian history, his commitment to preserving Africville’s memory as well as being a beacon of its future, Eddie’s trailer stood as both a personal home and a public testament to his cause. It remains a powerful visual reminder of his steadfast determination and will continue to symbolize the ongoing legacy and spirit of Africville for generations to come.
Throughout the years, Edward participated in numerous interviews and was featured in many articles and documentaries highlighting his protest and the broader story of Africville; He served as a special director in Amazon Music’s 2022 award winning podcast, Africville Forever. Eddie was also the only civilian to ever address the board of the Canadian Labour Congress in Ottawa. Through these platforms, he ensured that the history, struggles, and strength of his community would never be forgotten. His work was recognized by the Honourable Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard within the senate chambers in Ottawa.
Beyond his activism, Eddie had a deep love for dogs, finding companionship and comfort in their loyal presence. Those who knew him well understood the special bond he shared with his four-legged friends.
Eddie’s legacy is one of courage, perseverance, and unwavering love for his community and family. His voice, presence, and commitment to justice will continue to inspire all who knew him and all who learn his story.

Visitation will be held on Thursday March 12, 2026 from 2pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm at New Horizons Baptist Church. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday March 13, 2026 at 1 pm, all in New Horizons Baptist Church, 5457 Nora Bernard St. Halifax.
