Tarra Chartrand Obituary

Tarra Chartrand,

Halifax, N.S.

It is with broken hearts, that we, the family of Tarra Laureli Rita Chartrand announce her passing on February 18, 2026, in the Victoria General Hospital. Tarra was born on August 10, 1980, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Tarra lived the last few years with recurrent cancer, demonstrating stunning determination and courage. She left peacefully and with grace for her next adventure on her own terms, in the arms of her mom, surrounded by the enduring love of her family and friends. In true Tarra fashion, she had us all laughing through tears until her last moments with us.

Tarra loved her administrative career, beginning at Saint Mary’s University and later Dalhousie University, where she worked until her illness. Tarra enjoyed and took pride in working with students; she made a difference in so many lives in immeasurable ways. Tarra made lifelong connections through her work at the universities, where colleagues quickly became friends, who she loved dearly and spoke of with such fondness for the laughter and fun times they shared.

Tarra has a wide circle of friends and family who will miss her dearly. She is survived by her cherished mother, Theresa Tilbury, her loving and devoted big brothers, Earl Chartrand (Johanna) and Jimmy Chartrand, nieces, nephews and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Tarra had a special relationship with her Aunt Sharon, and they shared many long phone calls, always with lots of jokes and laughter. A special thank you to The Daisies (Kim, Bonnie, Judy, Wendy, Johanna, Kelly, and her mum) a group of women who embarked on many adventures with Tarra, making memories that will never be forgotten. Additionally, we would like to thank her closest childhood friend, Jennifer Butler. Jennifer and her family, who had come to be Tarra’s second family, stayed with her until the end, offering unwavering love and support. Tarra loved all animals, and she was a devoted cat mom to Robert and Fred, who are being lovingly cared for by her family.

Tarra was predeceased by her father, Joseph Chartrand.

To know Tarra was to love her. Her kindness and acceptance to everyone, quick wit and effortless sense of humour made every moment memorable; the sound of Tarra’s laughter will be deeply missed. Our lives are forever changed by her presence, and we will carry her love, her joy and her spirit with us always. We love you, Tarra. It is impossible to say good-bye, so we will follow your lead and say, “so long, for now.”

We would like to thank the many doctors, nurses, including her palliative team and other hospital staff, who showed Tarra compassion and care through challenging days and to the family and friends who continue to reach out and support us through this difficult time.

Cremation has taken place under the care of T.J. Tracey Funeral Home, Halifax. A celebration of Tarra’s life will be held in Halifax, to be announced at a later date.

Tarra has requested that any donations in her name be made to the Nova Scotia SPCA or another local animal shelter.
