Arthur William MacNeil, 61
Glace Bay/Calgary, AB
Arthur William MacNeil, 61, of Glace Bay/Calgary AB, passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at the Arthur J.E. Child Cancer Centre in Calgary, Alberta, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on August 11, 1964, Arthur carried with him a spirit of adventure, loyalty, and deep-rooted love for home and family. Though he made his life in Calgary for many years, his heart forever belonged to Cape Breton. Bridgeport, where he was raised, remained the place of his happiest memories - spent with childhood friends.
Arthur dedicated much of his working life to the oil patch in Alberta. His career took him to remote job sites, often flying by helicopter- something he truly loved. He worked in seismic testing with Clean Harbors and later helped build pipeline alongside his favourite field boss, James Haldenbury.
Arthur was an avid lover of the outdoors and remained active. Rollerblading was one of his favourite pastimes. He lived fully and energetically, embracing life with gratitude.
Arthur leaves behind his loving mother, Carol Charles (Anderson) and stepfather, Norman Charles; his daughter, Monica Burchell of Sydney; and his three grandchildren, Destiny, Alayah, and Nixon. He is also survived by his sisters, Jean (Fred) Tilley of Sydney Mines and Janet (Darryl) Marshall of Glace Bay; his nieces, Emily (Liam Nicholson) of Sydney Mines, Mairi (Taha Masood) of Milton, ON, and Caylin MacPherson of Ottawa, ON; and his great-nieces, Zara and Zoya Taha, and great-nephew, Khalid Taha. Also left behind are many aunts, uncles, and cousins on the MacNeil, O’Regan, Anderson, and Paquet sides of the family.
He was predeceased by his father, John MacNeil; his biological father, Art O’Regan, who passed away when Arthur was six months old; his maternal grandparents; and his paternal grandparents.
Cremation has taken place under the care of McInnis & Holloway Funeral Home, Calgary, Alberta. Visitation will be held at T.J. Tracey Funeral Home, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, N.S. (902-849-4199), on Friday, February 27, 2026, from 12-1 p.m., with a Memorial Service to follow at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Palliative Care at the Arthur J.E. Child Cancer Centre, or to a charity of one’s choice.
