It is with heavy hearts that the family of Marg MacInnis (née Campbell) announce her passing at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Friday, January 30, 2026.
Born at St. Rita’s Hospital in Sydney, she was the daughter of Angus and Betty Campbell of East Bay.
Marg worked in the insurance industry for over 45 years, with the majority of her career being spent as Sales Manager at MacLeod Lorway Insurance, where she cared so deeply for all of her co-workers and clients.
If there was anyone who knew how to have a good time, it was Marg. Being the nucleus of the family, you would often see her hosting incredible dinners at her beloved homestead in Northside East Bay, or a pool day in the middle of summer, a Good Friday “Old Bags Bash”, or a kitchen party to celebrate anyone’s milestone or achievement. She was our rock.
If you were lucky enough to know Marg, you knew that she was a fiercely loving friend who never made anything about herself and only wanted to know how you or your family were doing. She cherished all the relationships she had with so many people, but especially her “Fritter Friday” crew consisting of life-long friends, Marie Fennell, Bernadette Bisson Taylor, and her partner in crime, her sister Liz. There was rarely a Friday morning where they didn’t visit Howie Centre Tim Horton’s then backtrack to East Bay Sandbar to enjoy their coffees, apple fritters and a “walk” while they waited for the sun to rise.
After doing so much traveling in her early years, Marg loved just being home. The doors at her place were revolving and she wouldn’t have had it any other way. Whether you were driving by and seeing her on her “perch” on the front deck giving her a “toot” or a wave, stopping in during a game of Yahtzee with Liz, or while a hockey game was on TV, she always had time for visitors and always had a cup of tea or a beer to hand you - and yes, she even made time for you while her soaps were on. Not to mention, there was always a room for you if you needed a place to stay. “The corner” in East Bay will never be the same.
Marg is survived by her best friend and son, Johnathan, who will miss her more than words can express. Also left to mourn her loss are her step-daughters; Heidi (Les) Urquhart and Jodi (Matthew) Sampson; brothers, David (Sandy) Campbell and Jody (Angela) Campbell; sister, Elizabeth (Bill) MacDonald; sisters-in-law, Susan Campbell, Cheryl Young, Deborah (Pernell) Carter, Shirley (Dave) Blanchard, and Helena MacInnis; brothers-in-law, Bernie MacPhee; Paul & Gordie MacInnis; step-brother, Rob (Heather) MacLean; step-sister, Shauna MacLean; her beloved grandchildren, Cohen Boudreau; Isla and Harrison Sampson; and many nieces and nephews, whom she treated as if they were her own kids.
Besides her parents, Marg was predeceased by her loving husband Stephen; brothers, John Murdock, Peter and Michael (Sharkey) Campbell; sister Judy MacPhee; brother-in-law, Billy; mother-in-law, Daisy and father-in-law, John MacInnis.
Throughout Marg’s illness, she received nothing but the best care imaginable. A very special thank you goes out to Dr. Walaa Moamer and her receptionist Edwina, Brett Gillis, Dr. Andrew Giorno, Dr. Lisa MacInnis, Dr. Meaghan Keating, Dr. Aaron Louette, Dr. Charlene Fitzgerald, Dr. Alexandra Omond, Dr. Saneea Abboud, Dr. Conrad Oja, the nurses and staff of the Palliative Care unit, the nurses and staff of the Cape Breton Cancer Centre and the nurses and staff of the 3A unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, who all looked after her as if she was their own. To the staff of Meadows Pharmasave, your care and attention to your patients is second-to-none, thank you for everything. We are forever grateful. Last but not least, a special thank you to her niece, Leebeth MacDonald, whom Marg adored, and sister Liz, for the care, commitment, compassion, late nights, laughs and love that you showed her, especially throughout her final months.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 7, 10 am, at St. Mary’s Parish in East Bay, Fr. Anthony O’Connor officiating, with a reception to follow at the East Bay Firehall. Interment at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to An Cala Palliative Care Cape Breton.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 6 Churchill Dr., Sydney, (902) 539-7175. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.tjtracey.com
