Glace Bay, N.S.

It is with profound sadness that the family of Mary Elizabeth (Liz) Tanner, 93, of Glace Bay, announce her passing on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, in the Seaview Manor. Born in Glace Bay, N.S. in 1932, Mary was the second oldest of twelve children of the late Harold and Mary Catherine (Murry) Proctor.

Mary was the cherished wife of the late James Tanner for 37 years. Mary met her husband James in Glace Bay and got married in 1952. Mary and James moved to Toronto and started their family. They had 6 children; Mary was a stay-at-home Mom in the beginning and in later years Mom went to work. In 1973 Mary and James moved some of their family back to Glace Bay, this is where their seventh child was born.

Mom became a member of Branch 3 Legion and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Mary played darts at Branch 12 Legion, Sydney. She enjoyed skating, darts, bingo and her friends Trudy Tracey, May Gallant, and many more.

Mary is survived by her children: Tom (Zen), Betty (Steve), and John; sons-in-law Carly Dean and Frank Kinsella; a brother James and sister Margorie (Joe); eleven grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband James Tanner; sons: James Jr. and Vincent; daughters Carol Kinsella and Lillian Debra-Ann Dean; partner of ten years Bill Cook; granddaughters Amanda Tanner and Mary Olga Wilcock. Sisters Donna, Rose, Mary June, Teresa O’Brien; brothers Micki, Joseph, Alfred, Pete, and David.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026, from 12-2 p.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 2 p.m., in Holy Cross Parish, Seaview St., Glace Bay, with Fr. Norman MacPhee presiding with a reception to follow in the lower level of the church. Burial will be held in Greenwood Cemetery at a later time.

At this time, our family would like to thank Dr. K. Cadegan for all the years taking care of our mom. To the doctors and nurses at both the Glace Bay Hospital and Cape Breton Regional Hospital for all the care, compassion and patience given to our mother over the years. We would also like to say thank you to the staff at Seaview Manor Glace Bay for taking care of our mom over the last few years.
