We are saddened to announce the passing of Peter Joseph Fanning on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Sydney, Peter was the son of the late Hazel and Peter Fanning.

Peter worked for many years at McGuire Farms before working at Scotia Wholesale as a truck driver and then Mason’s Wholesale until his retirement. He coached Westmount Soccer when his boys were young. He enjoyed watching hockey and classic westerns on TV. Peter, along with his late wife Sheila, organized Community Bingo in Westmount for many years.

He is survived by his son, Chris (Kim) Fanning; daughter, Sherry Fanning (Derek); brothers, Michael and Billy; sisters, Delores, Jeanette, and Annie; 9 grandchildren, Michael (Vanessa), Chelsey (Steven), Cody (Angela), Dillon (Maggie), Jocelyn (Tyler), Kyla (William), Brandon (Paige), Jordan (Nikki), and Stephanie (Tevin); and 22 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife of 47 years, Sheila (Anderson) Fanning; son, Sheldon Fanning; brothers, Nick, George, Johnny, Emmett; sisters, Josie, Colleen; and a great-granddaughter.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 6 Churchill Drive, Sydney, 902-539-7175. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Sunday, January 25, from 1:00 – 2:00 pm followed by a service in the chapel at 2, Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. There will be a reception afterwards. Burial in Holy Rosay Cemetery at a later date.
